Sandé made her singing career debut in 2009 after appearing on the track she wrote for Chipmunk's first debut single, "Diamond Rings". The single charted at No. 6 on the UK Singles Charts, making it Chipmunk and Sandé's first ever Top 10 Hit. She later appeared on another single singing guest vocals, after collaborating with Wiley on his comeback single "Never Be Your Woman", the single charted at number-eight on the UK Singles Charts becoming Sandé's second consecutive Top 10 Single.
Sandé decided against using the name Adele Sandé, due to Adele's growing success, so used her middle name instead. She revealed: "I changed it as soon as Adele came out. I just thought, 'You've kind of taken the [name] now', so I went with my middle name. She was just getting bigger and bigger, so I thought I just really need it."
A former medical student, Sandé appeared as a guest vocalist on Professor Green's 2011 UK #1 single Read All About It and soon went on to achieve her own chart success with her first solo release Heaven, which debuted in the UK Singles Chart at #2. Her debut album Our Version of Events was released on 12th February 2012. The album includes the singles Next To Me, Daddy and My Kind Of Love.
Before branching out on her own Sandé had already had a taste of chart success having collaborated with rapper Chipmunk on his song Diamond Rings, and then with Wiley on Never Be Your Woman. She has also written for or collaborated with artists including Let Go, Let It Rain, Susan Boyle and Cheryl Cole.
In a major feature in their Saturday Review paper, The Times declared Emeli Sandé "The Voice of 2012". The New York Times said “Ms. Sandé has a perspective-altering voice, clear and brassy and weapons-grade”. Fellow artists have also proclaimed their admiration, including Alicia Keys, “I just love her style and her flow – super raw.”, and Adele, "How incredible is she?".
Our Version of Events is the UK's biggest selling debut album of 2012.
Sandé appeared at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. She performed Abide with Me

Wait For Me
Emeli Sandé Lyrics

I'm gonna miss you, I'll keep your picture here with me every day
It ain't gon' be easy but baby, believe me
We're gonna make it through
Yeah, we've gotta be strong, it won't be too long
I'm gonna be back soon
Baby, say you'll wait for me
Baby, say you'll pray for me
And think about me when I'm gone
Please just keep the lights on
Soon enough I'll be coming home
Just baby, say you'll wait for me
I promise that I'll never take too long
I'm pretty far now, breaking my heart how can't put my arms 'round you
Every night I'm dreaming about the things that we used to do
I know it took longer and sometimes you wonder if you're running out of faith
Baby, don't say that I'm on my way back
I will not be late
Baby, say you'll wait for me
I promise that I'll never take too long
Baby, say you'll pray for me
And think about me when I'm gone
Please, just keep the lights on
And soon enough I'll be coming home
Just baby, say you'll wait for me
I promise that I'll never take too long
Too long
Too long
Too long
I'll never take too long
Too long
Too long
Whenever our song is playing
I think 'bout the springtime, baby
I hope that my letters reached you
I hope that you know I need you
Whenever you really miss me
Just know that you're right here with me
You're right here with me, baby
Baby, say you'll wait for me
I promise that I'll never take too long
Baby, say you'll pray for me
And think about me when I'm gone
Please, just keep the lights on
'Cause soon enough I'll be coming home
Just baby, say you'll wait for me
I promise that I'll never take too long
Too long
Too long
Too long
I'll never take too long
Too long
Too long
The lyrics of Emeli Sandé's song "Wait For Me" depict a heartfelt plea from the singer to a loved one as she prepares to leave. The song captures the bittersweet emotions of longing and separation, while also reassuring the listener that their love will endure.
In the first verse, Sandé expresses her desire to stay but acknowledges her impending departure. She conveys her deep affection and promises to keep a picture of the person with her every day. Although the upcoming separation won't be easy, she reassures the listener that they will make it through by remaining strong, and she vows to return soon.
The chorus serves as a central theme in the song, where Sandé pleads for her loved one to wait for her. She promises that she won't take too long and asks them to pray for her and think about her during her absence. The reference to keeping the lights on symbolizes the hope of their reunion, emphasizing that they will be together again before too long.
The second verse reveals the distance that has grown between Sandé and her loved one, stating that she is far away and yearning to be able to hold them in her arms once more. She reminisces about the things they used to do together and recognizes that the wait has been long, acknowledging any wavering faith on the other person's part. She then assures them that she is on her way back and will not be late.
The bridge adds a touch of sentimentality to the song. Sandé mentions that whenever a song they share plays, it invokes memories of their time together, particularly the joy of spring. She hopes that her letters have reached the person and conveys the depth of her need for them. She reassures them that even when they miss her, she carries them in her heart.
The final repetition of the chorus serves as a reaffirmation of Sandé's commitment to returning to her loved one. She promises once again not to take too long and asks for their patience and faith. The repeated phrase "too long" emphasizes her commitment to a timely return and the strength of their love.
Overall, "Wait For Me" explores the ache of separation in a relationship, while also offering hope, reassurance, and a promise of reunion. The song captures the emotional struggle faced by individuals forced to be apart, portraying a deep love that transcends distance and time.
