Asleep
Emily Browning Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I'm tired and I
I want to go to bed

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
And then leave me alone
Don't try to wake me in the morning
'Cause I will be gone
Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I will feel so glad to go

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore

Sing to me
Sing to me
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore

Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I really want to go

There is another world
There is a better world
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Well

Bye bye

Bye bye
Bye

Overall Meaning

The song "Asleep" by Emily Browning portrays a sense of longing and despair. The lyrics revolve around someone who is tired of living and simply wants to be put to sleep forever. The singer asks to be sang to sleep and expresses a desire to not wake up on their own anymore. The chorus repeats this request, but adds a deeper layer with the line "deep in the cell of my heart, I will feel so glad to go." This line indicates that the singer is in a dark place and is hopeful for the release of death. The bridge of the song introduces the idea of another world, where things may be better. The line "there is a better world, well there must be" highlights how the singer sees no hope in their current life and looks to death as the "better world." The song's emotional impact is enhanced by the soft, mournful tone of the music and Browning's quiet, desperate vocals.

It's unfortunate how most people seemed to not like this movie due to not understanding it. Sucker punch was powerful/ very meaningful metaphoric art. It was all about escaping internal struggles and/or past trauma. The whole main idea/ message it gave off is that when it comes down to it, you have all the weapons you need, "so fight!" Implying that you are essentially your own key to your own escape to be free. We all have guardian angels (baby doll was sweet peas) but at the end of the day, it's not the guardian Angels story, it's yours, so be strong. It was sweet peas story all along, not baby doll's. It also didn't matter that baby doll was still stuck at the institution because douche bags have nothing without your brain. There's no longer that visible fear and pain they sense of you that they thrive off of. Another thing they tried getting across is, all audiences see is "hot chicks" in "skin revealing" clothing dancing sexily but just like in this movie, females can use/ embrace their sexuality to the fullest to distract you from what's "really going on". Like a war in baby doll's mind in which she's kicking ass. All you see though, is a more "weak", more "innocently" figure dancing you could take advantage of. Or how the other girl characters in this movie were stealing things from some of the men while the guy was watching a performance being what he thought "groomed" and all comforted by the ladies, little did he know, their only intentions were to steal their "freedom" object from the scum. Those characters were also only sweet peas emotions, except for her sister (rocket) . The scene where rocket dies was meant to be a demonstration of her finally expecting that her sister is dead. When the other girls were killed off, that was a symbolization of ''death' to those sort of "in the way" emotions that sweet pea needed to let go off. Truly, such a bold, empowering, and deep creation of a movie.

@jhegova

What movie is this song from please?

@rina123456

@@jhegova The movie is literally called Sucker Punch lol

@tsnyder6668

People who dont get this movie lack a proper historical frame of reference for the patriarchal legacy of institutionalizing and lobotomizing women and the authority given to men in their lives. No one believes this girl. She lives in a state of powerlessness except for inner strength. Her world is so bleak that she welcomes the blankness that a lobotomy will bring. She is traumatized and tired of fighting. Another song on the soundtrack, "army of me" says her "rescue squad" is too "exhausted". Yes, this movie is a masterpiece.
