Icarus
Emma Blackery Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You got your eyes closed
Such a temper
Been so long that
You can't remember
How it started
How they took you down

You got your wings up
Now they're laughing
You're the food at the feast
That they're having
And you know running away
Doesn't prove them wrong

Well have you tried apologising?
Do you know the mess you've made?
You believe you hold the answers
But your feathers are all frayed

Oh well, Icarus, Icarus
Why you so serious, serious?
You know you gotta let it go
Cos you're flying too close

There in your ego
Lies your weakness
Wrap it tightly
And keep it at your chest
You are only
The front that you harness

Cos silence is so underrated
Their voices are a loaded gun
You'll be swallowed up by the sun
Cos you're trying to be someone

Oh well, Icarus, Icarus
Why you so serious, serious?
You know you gotta let it go
Cos you're flying too close
Oh well, Icarus, Icarus
You're being so dangerous, dangerous
You know the higher you fly
The less you can hide

Cos they're all waiting in the ocean
With open arms to drag you down
So have you tried apologising
Before you start to drown?

Oh well, Icarus, Icarus
Why you so serious, serious?
You know you gotta let it go
Cos you're flying too close
Oh well, Icarus, Icarus
You're being so dangerous, dangerous

You know the higher you fly
The less you can hide

Overall Meaning

In Emma Blackery's song "Icarus," the lyrics present a cautionary tale about the dangers of hubris and ego. The song takes inspiration from the Greek myth of Icarus, who flew too close to the sun and melted the wax on his wings, causing him to fall to his death. The lyrics advise against becoming too full of oneself, warning that this leads to vulnerability and danger.

The first verse of the song acknowledges that sometimes people become so consumed with their own importance that they forget how they got there in the first place. The second verse advises against running away from criticism and instead suggests that apologizing may be the solution. The chorus repeatedly asks why Icarus is so serious and suggests that he needs to let go of his ego before it inevitably leads to his downfall.

The final verse emphasizes the danger of being too high up and the inevitability of being taken down. The song advises Icarus to apologize before it's too late and to recognize that the higher he flies, the less he can hide. Overall, the lyrics of "Icarus" present a thoughtful cautionary tale about the dangers of being consumed by ego.

I love how with the rhythm and the visuals, it makes the song an infinite loop. They start and end with the same beat, so that in the last chorus when you fly and turn red, you can assume you fall down into the water, and then it loops right back to the beginning when you emerge from the water and do it all over again.

About 2 years ago I laid on my bed in my towel after a shower one night feeling depressed and broken and cried my eyes out to this. I felt completely lost and exhausted and a few days later my first love of 4 years broke my heart real bad. I couldn't listen to this again for a long time as it just tied me up with thoughts of heartbreak. That is, until it suddenly came on my spotify today and I tell you it was an amazing feeling to listen again and realise how far I've come since then. I feel free from all that pain now. Amazing how music can hallmark periods of time in your life. Love your song Emma.

Wasn't keen on Dirt, was meh on Agenda, but this is lovely! I feel like it brings out the sweetness in your voice so much better and as a result, generated a far greater emotional impact than with the others. :-D

The Tweeky Gang for me it was the other way around. I loved the other two but I only got obsessed with this after listening to it a few times

I don't like dirt and agenda because of my tastes even though I can see all the work put in it and I admire Emma for this but this song is really relatable and it can have so many meanings that I like to be sung, I love this song and Emma can be an excellent singer/song writter in my opinion !
