Raised within an artistic family, Emmy Curl feeds her dreamy and colorful music with a passion for other areas such as photography, art and fashion (she created a sewing workshop, which helps her fund her growing passion for recording). All of these activities are part of a rich curriculum whose main goal is to try harder and do better. It’s onstage that Emmy Curl combines all her vocations, enriching her live act with the experience of performing with Rouge, a theatrical band from Aveiro, where she currently lives.
Blessed with a careful image and singular imaginary, Emmy Curl likes to take control at every stage of the recording, from production to graphic work, and has had a growing but intense impact on the public: on Youtube, there’s an increasing number of covers of her songs, made by her fans. And Emmy Curl herself isn’t shy from walking on the fans shoes, having signed notable versions from songs such as “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song”, by Fleet Foxes, and “Cayman Islands”, originally written by Kings Of Convenience.
Andrew Bird, Little Dragon, Zero 7, Goldfrapp, José González and Jorge Palma are among the artists Emmy Curl likes to listen to, and whose influence often shows, in her scented and steamy songs.
In her new EP, “Origins”, Emmy promises to keep the musical personality that she has been displaying, while at the same time trying to take the songs through new and adventurous ways. André Tentugal (from Portuguese band We Trust) is a guest on the second chapter of her work. As her fellow countryman, writer Miguel Torga said, in a quote cited in some interviews to promote the debut EP, “sometimes I call it a curse, a mixture of spell and prayer”.
Fireflies

I know everything
I know your face
I know you watch me from above
I used to smoke
At night I light my cigarette to fireflies
I know you see me
But I′m a mermaid
I can't go out
But I′m a mermaid
I can't go out
But I'm a mermaid
Here, underwater
I know everything
I know your face
I know you watch me from above
But I′m a mermaid
I can′t go out
But I'm a mermaid
I can′t go out
I'm stuck inside my pain
I′m stuck inside my pain
Loneliness is my name
You can't listen to me
But I′m a mermaid
But I'm a mermaid
And I'm still down here
And I′m still down here
Emmy Curl's "Fireflies" is a hauntingly beautiful song that paints a vivid picture of a mermaid languishing underwater. The first verse establishes the setting - the singer is submerged, and yet, she has a clear view of everything above. She is well aware that there is someone watching her from the surface. In the second verse, the singer makes a reference to her past addictive habits, saying that she used to smoke. But now, she lights her cigarette to the light of the fireflies underwater, knowing that someone above is watching her and perhaps even dreaming of her.
As the chorus creeps in, the lyrics become more pointed, as the mermaid becomes resigned to her fate. She knows she cannot go out, that she's stuck inside her pain, that loneliness is her only companion. But she keeps repeating the line, "I'm a mermaid," almost like a refrain, as if trying to convince herself that there is still some magic left in her. The final verse echoes this, with the singer acknowledging that she remains trapped in the underwater world, looking up at those who have the freedom to move as they please.
