Those Were The Days
Engelbert Humperdinck Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And dreamed of all the great things we would do

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose, we'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
La la la la la la, La la la la la la
Those were the days
Oh yes, those were the days

Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance, I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another, and we'd say

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose, we'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
La la la la la la, La la la la la la
Those were the days
Oh yes, those were the days

Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely man really me

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose, we'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
La la la la la la, La la la la la la
La la la la....
La la la la la la, La la la la la la
La la la la....

Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh, my friend, we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose, we'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
La la la la la la, La la la la la la
La la la la....

La la la la la la, La la la la la la
La la la la....

Overall Meaning

Engelbert Humperdinck's song "Those Were the Days" is a nostalgic tune that reflects on the carefree summer days of the past. The lyrics talk about simple pleasures, such as soda, pretzels, and beer, and the joys of spending time at the beach with friends. The song encourages listeners to embrace the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer, to sing a song of cheer, and to wish that summer could always be here.

In addition, the song also touches on the excitement of going to a drive-in theater and experiencing romantic movie scenes. The lyrics suggest that the drive-in experience is more romantic than what is shown on the screen itself. The song's overall message is that time spent with loved ones during the summer is cherished and to be enjoyed to the fullest.

These songs echoed throughout the house during my childhood. My mother loved Englebert. God rest her soul.

@Ruth S Yes, and I do. It breaks my heart just thinking about it. RIP, mom 🌹 ✝️. I love you! ❤️

mine too! Engelbart Humperdinck and tom jones feel like family to me still have to play their music for the holidays

Laurie Davis

Yup my mom too. But what i remember most is that my siblings & i thought that poor Englebert’s name was just about the funniest thing we’d ever heard! Somehow even more side splitting to hear our adorably clueless mom say it, so each time she played the album we’d ask: what’s this guy’s name? … Mom, what is his name again? … wait, how do you say his name? … gotta wonder now if she thought we had early group dementia or what?! Actually she turned out to be way cooler than we thought - parents usually are - she was prolly just going along with
her little idiots!

Sorry, i know i talk too much. Anyway! So did anyone else find his name amusing! Just curious?

The song was "prophetic." Simply, it told of the future and the past. People will begin to remember, just as the song says, and they will weep for what is no more.

Al O'Veira

Perfectly said.
