It was the best piece i've ever sung, as an Alto 2 this was amazing, the only one time we got to sing so loud and high, and the first time that Alto 2 carried a piece. I hated always being suppressed by the Sopranos so this piece was just freedom for me.

It really does feature the alto line. The soprano line goes high, but the altos get such an interesting part.

I've had the honor of performing this piece with a small choir. It is insanely difficult (notice all the legato and the tied notes where one would expect a moment to pause: there are NO seams noted in the the piece for breathing). But it is so beautiful that the right word for it really is "breathtaking."

As someone who performed this song in a state performance choir, the breath control we had to learn was INSANE. We got to perform this piece at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. And if you aren’t familiar, it’s this absolutely MASSIVE prestige Cathedral that has eight seconds of reverb where you aren’t allowed to speak above a whisper because it is so intense. I have no idea how our director got us to be able to sing there during the open hours while there were hundreds touring. The insane revers on top of how buttered the chords and vocals are made it even that much more challenging with no prep. But it is a core memory for sure. This song, even for me who is not religious, is so painstakingly beautiful to sing and you’re right- it absolutely is an honor. And steals your breath figuratively and literally. Hahah

i come back every so often to listen. I sang this over 20 yrs ago, in my young teens and it's still everything to me in a tight, few minute package. When we first sang it in a church the reverberations brought tears to my eyes, that hasn't changed to this day and i dont think it ever will.

Unless you're talking about the soaring sustained notes, all that mid-staff nonsense is alto's, doggy. I remember this being one of the only pieces you ever get to sing as an alto where you aren't just backup for the sopranos.

The Advanced Mixed Choir at Portage High School is doing this at their first concert of the year. I am a freshman in the class (which is rare) and singing 1st tenor, or the part where both sops and tens are singing the same and I sing the really high note at the top where it gets to Fortissimo. It's quite an honor to be doing this as a freshman, really. Such a beautiful piece.

I cannot believe that this bit of the Orthodox repertoire has escaped me lo these many years. Granted, it has been ages since I sang in the Eastern Rite choir at university, but our conductor - along with the Russian choir (which performed a number of pieces in Slavonic ... thank you, Rich!) attempted to expose us Americans (and I, a Protestant one at that) to the widest range, as well as the best, of Slavic music. @Themitz - I live on the south coast of England and last Sunday evening attended the Christmas Carol service in Chichester's lovely Anglican Cathedral. Guess what? After the Bible reading (in modern English) from Luke 1:26-38 the Choir sang the Bogoroditse Dyevo (in Church Slavonic). The pronunciation seemed okay to me. In my Church of England parish we still worship in the archaic language of 1662, using "Thou art the same Lord" instead of "You are the same Lord". I can understand it, but outside of a William Shakespeare play, you'd never hear such expressions in use in the England of today.

I miss this so damn much. I sang this with an awesome choir in Fairbanks AK almost 20 years ago. Still gives me chills, I still know all the lyrics. I was a baritone, and had the honor of jumping to tenor 2 and then bass 2. Best years of my life.

You can't sing this with no fight you put you're hard ship into singing it all your human pain in one blast of liberation.
That is how I sung my version and I don't even speak russian.

My high school choir did this a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, most of them didn't appreciate how beautiful it was and instead were laughing at how some of the words sounded. We sounded amazing but I was disappointed by the attitude of some of my fellow students. Especially with such a beautiful piece.

They don't say privyet because zdrastvtuje is hard for them to
pronounce, lol, it's just because it's less formal. They are native
speakers for God's sake and have zero trouble pronouncing one of their most basic words. Just because you have problems, doesn't mean you have to project them onto others.

That's a beautiful and wonderful vocal.work which was composed by the great and brilliant Russian Sergej Rakhmaniov between the late 1915 and the early 1916 which was included into a larger vocal music work which was titled "Vespers" or "All night vigil" which became performed for first time at concert where some money was saved to subside the Russian Armish when Mother Russia was in war against Germany and the Austrian Empire with an alliance relationship with France and the United Kingdom..

So im a sophmore in my schools concert choir and this is one of the first pieces we are learning. As someone who can learn the meat of the song but learns the timing and other stuff better from hearing the more experienced singing it this is hard since it sounds like just a bunch of oohs and ahhs and stuff.

Believe it or not, it isn't that difficult. I sung with a group and we covered this song. All of us in the bass section (10 Basses) could all hit the Profundo notes with ease. We also did Salve Regina. If you'd like to hear some nice Profundo work, look it up on here. "Medieval Chant of the Templars. Antiphona: Salve Regina" is the exact version we did.

I did learn Russian for two years. Amazing language, shame about some of the madness for some words. The word for a tourist "sight" is about 40 letters long!. utter madness. Just getting some parts of the alphabet is strange, what with there being two silent letters that have corresponding symbols!
