Eno is the greatest, most important single figure in modern popular music. To think he is still plugging his music discretely while producing bands like Coldplay (Teardrop is an Eno song, like Born Under Punches, or Heroes a 100% Eno song), and this album is still modern 50 years after most of these songs were composed, is most amazing.

Imagine being a 18yr old coming home in 1974 with this LP, simply because you knew of Eno from the two previous Roxy Music albums you had, and listening to this song for the first time and feeling that finally...... Oh my God!....... this!.....this is what I mean.....this is MY music.

please excuse and pardon me: i made a thumb down, because this reads like quacky to me - during the mid 70s they played it regularly in our old hippie disco and i danced regularly to it and it was absolutely on spot and not a single inch ahead of it´s time! people keep forgetting, that a certain time has always more to offer, than the styles labeled to it by the masses...
since a few years i am on a revisiting trip, mainly to show some of my old musical heroes to my daughter (16 now), beginning with the who, my first fav band in the late 60s, and EVERYWHERE in the comments of the 60s bands, literally under every f... antastic band i read, they were far ahead of their time and underrated - imagine they say this about ten years after or even about the 70s stars steely dan - and so on and so on - sometimes i couldn´t decide if i´d laugh or cry... :-)
exactly a decade later i myself played mock funk for the punks and scratched to it - i had a jacket with pictures from my old school books glued to it and i wore selfmade trousers from old kitchen curtains...

Astonishing. Unreal. First time to hear this and totally blown away. 52 years old now and how come I never heard it before. Unbelievable. Should have 100,000,000+ views. Nails the punk / new wave / alternative sound on the head. Forget about the attitude or fashion. This is the sound. I can hear a thousand bands / songs in this one piece of pure creative genius. This is the first. Nothing remotely like it prior as far as I know. Sorry, but step aside Iggy.

This sounds more like the late 70s or early 80s than it does 1974. However, the bass line is truly distinctive, really not like anything else of any time. As fresh now as it was the first time I heard it, 35 years ago, and it was already more than 10 years old then.

I am not sure kids today have the slights idea of the impact a song like this had on us kids 45 years ago. I don't believe there is anything comparabe, even in the slightest, today. It was way too different from anything else being played in 1974, and only five years later, with bands like Joy Division (which felt ' revolutionary' when introduced in the late 1970's) or Kraftwerk, that music began to sound more like what we heard in this album.

we could spend a lifetime discussing if Bauhaus version is better or not. I would say 60/40 in favor of Brian's version. A bit more madness perhaps, versus a more speed one... In any case, this song is a basement for so many bands, so many sounds to come, it opened/broke so many doors in this f..k industry... this is still a masterpiece.

I have noticed a lot of comments on old videos saying that people wish they lived in that timeline. But I honestly feel very very blessed for living now, when it is possible to find gems like this. In any other way I just would not be able to do even a half of thing I can. In the end it would be just me locked in my room, rotting. Honestly this is the first time I’m listening to this and I’m no way near born around this time but to me this is great sounds kinda like the glaxo babies but to me this sound very 80’s but just crazy how that sound is all the way back to 60’s punk but this is early 70’s crazy how much of the 80’s sound there was outside of the 80’s

Well, in retrospect...this makes perfect sense. Even I who have a few early treasured Eno albums had no idea the Bauhaus rendition was a cover. Not even sure if the track listings mention it? Anyways, as I said, it makes perfect sense. Eno is a singular genius. Bauhaus was great, but they were smart to cover this.

Bauhaus were original in their time, but ENO was seven years ahead of his time... He goes directly from Glam Rock (1974) to Gothic Post-punk,(1981) in only one song... two years before that Punk started even to exist... Not only can we hear Bauhaus in this song... We can hear echoes of the future arrangements of "The Hanging Garden" from The Cure (1982) in this song,too.

At tbe age of 16 I went, for the first time, to a PIPS a night club in Manchester England, known for playing esoteric music including David Bowie, Roxy Music, The New York Dolls, Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground. As I made my way to the " Bowie Room" Third Uncle was playing. I am now 61 but remember it like it was yesterday.

In the documentary, it was a session musician messing around as other's were recording, not realizing what he was playing was also being recorded, who accidentally created the base line to this song. He was one key off on his piano (keyboard?) and when he heard it played back, the base line, off-key, stood out. He thought he was going to be sent packing over the mistake. Watch "The Man Who Fell Too Earth", as my recolection may be a bit foggy. Eno rules!

First thing to come to my brain was " that's a Bauhaus song" thinking that Eno covered it since Bauhaus did their version back in the late 70's. Then I thought I was just losing my mind and maybe they are two different songs since I haven't listened to a Bauhaus album in about 25 years but after seeing what openVault wrote I realize I'm sane. Good on Brian Eno; I love his King Crimson stuff; now I'm going to check out what the openVAULT has.

Just to be overly pedantic, Eno wasn’t a part of King Crimson. He did a lot of collaboration with Robert Fripp but he never was a member of the band.
