S.O.S.
Erasure Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where are those happy days?
They seem so hard to find
I tried to reach for you
But you have closed your mind
What ever happened to our love?
I wish I understood
It used to be so nice
It used to be so good

[Chorus:]
So when you're near me
Darling can't you hear me?
S.O.S.
The love you gave me
Nothing else can save me
S.O.S.

When you're gone
How can I even try to go on?
When you're gone
Though I try, how can I carry on?

You seemed so far away
Though you were standing near
You made me feel alive
But something died, I fear
I really tried to make it out
I wish I understood
What happened to our love?
It used to be so good

[Chorus]

When you're gone
How can I even try to go on?
When you're gone (When you're gone)
Though I try, how can I carry on?

[Chorus]

When you're gone
How can I even try to go on?
When you're gone (When you're gone)
Though I try, how can I carry on?
[Repeat]

Carry on.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song S.O.S. by British synth-pop duo Erasure talk about the end of a relationship that was once full of happiness and love. The first two lines "Where are those happy days? They seem so hard to find" set the melancholic tone of the song, expressing how the happy memories of the past are slowly fading away. The singer then tries to reach out to his partner, but they have already closed their mind and heart, leaving the singer bewildered and confused.

The chorus of the song features the code word S.O.S., which usually means "save our souls" in distress or emergency situations. Here, it represents the love that the partner gave to the singer, which now seems to be the only thing that can save him from the pain of separation. The following lines "When you're gone, how can I even try to go on? When you're gone, though I try, how can I carry on?" express the deep emotional struggle that the singer is going through, as he cannot imagine moving on from this relationship without the love of his partner.

Overall, S.O.S. is a poignant song that beautifully captures the feelings of heartbreak, loss, and longing that often come with the end of a romantic relationship.

Andy Bell most underrated singer of the 90s. I always loved him

@leagreenall5972

Vince was so on his synth game with this song... and I dare say; better than the original!!

@rubenmartinezhernandez6916

I like this version too 😃🎶.

@frankschmitz6117

No, it's ok, but no way better than ABBA. That's simply impossible.

@leagreenall5972

@@frankschmitz6117 lol... each to their own. I love ABBA, grew up with my mother constantly playing them on the Bang & Olufsen turn table - so I knew quality :)

But Erasure - well, they are the love of my life in the same vein ABBA was to my mother ;)

@mathewfinley607

I totally agree

@shaggydog9789

This is an absolutely fantastic cover but until original is simply peerless and an all time classic. This isn’t better than the original but they definitely did the song justice.

I've always enjoyed ABBA, but I like every single Erasure's cover of their music even MORE.

@rickjones1676

Agree, incredibly I would have to say Erasure's version of SOS is possibly even better than ABBAs - and that really is saying something
