@비니보이 More often than not, it's just stuck pawls. Try this. Keep in mind, it can sometimes take longer, and repeated applications of solvent and movement to get the pawls freed up.

Great info, you have inspired my 14 year old kid to work on his bike and now is tooling on his friends. Keeps him away from the TV and games which were his addiction. I was getting ready to go throught the complete overhaul of the shifters and this video saved me a couple of hours (and more aggravation). The right one took a bit more convincing that in the video, but at the end it started catching as new. I sprayed new lubricant inside and I'm ready to go. Thank you, RJ !

Excellent video! With MTB rapidfire shifters, you can take off the casing to see the innards and then you can actually see which pawl(s) aren't springing back and just target the gt85/wd40 to the gunked up pawl and wiggle it free with a flathead screwdriver... that way you don't need to go crazy with solvent everywhere and having to then re-lube it all. Most have a topbolt so you can easily remove the shifter without the hassle of sliding the grips and levers off first.

Amazing! I was looking at buying a whole new left hand gear/brake assembly because I thought it was simply worn out. Anyway due to insanely long shipping times to get a new part I simply decided to see if I could do a temporary fix for now. Anyway the whole thing feels like new. I even did the other side too as it was starting to feel a bit slippy and it's loads better now as well.

Do you have any videos on how to deal with seized alan key bolts under the seat? They're also starting to round off so I don't get the best grip and teh seat moves from side to side as I'm riding and I can't tighten the clamp underneath.

RJ, your method worked great on my ancient Shimano 105 shifter. Symptoms exactly as you described in your video, and solution was exactly as you demonstrated. You saved me $, not having to buy new parts or even burn time disassembling! Muchas gracias - simple, practical, elegant solution.

Hi RJ, i remember asking a question about miss-shifting awhile ago and we weren't sure. I cleaned under the hoods and oiled, also replaced a cable. Seemed to only happen during the winter. I saw a video from a guy in poland (from 2018) who i think may have set this straight. I would try and upshift on the rear gears and it would not shift once or twice, usually took 3 shifts. I would push the small lever all the way to the left and nothing. I thought it was temperature induced or perhaps moisture, especially since it was later fine in winter. He showed that when you push the large lever in slightly, as soon as it starts, it actually takes over - and it cancels the small lever at that point. And this he says happens the most when wearing thick gloves. Which is in the winter. So i think this is what was happening. Sometimes i wear 2 layers. It will be interesting to try and keep this in mind and concentrate on shifting that small lever. This never happened when shifting to a larger cog in the back.

Another method to try is to spray some degreaser ( such as Super Clean ) or WD-40 into the mechanism, let it sit for a minute then get some high precision instrument, or electric parts cleaner and with the little tube you can blast out the old grease with the high pressure from the aerosol can. Those instrument cleaners dry almost instantly and leave no residue, repeat as needed and then use proper lube to finish.

Hi there RJ,
Just wanted to say a massive thank you to you.
I've just resurrected a pair of RSX 7 speed/triple shifters on my Dads bike that's been stored in his garage for the best part of 20 years.
The levers were totally dead, stuck in the highest gears with no indexing at all.
WD40 worked its magic, then a bit of GT85 and now they feel like they did when I fitted them over 20 years ago!

Thanks for the Video, it really helps bringing shifters back to life. I worked on my shimano 600 STIs and now the shift perfectly. However I realized another issue with them: the hoods are pretty old and the feel a little bit sticky. Now I know, that this is the natural decaying process of rubber. However I was wondering, if there is any way to fix the stickyness without buying new ones, as these hoods are very hard to find.

I recently purchased a beautiful, late 90's, Giant Team CFR composite bike for $25 that had nice 105 shifters. It also came with an extra pair of ITM Super 330 bars with Ultegra shifters. I didn't think much about it until I watched your video. Sure enough, the left one wouldn't disengage to release cable allowing to shift to smaller front chaining. I followed your instructions, wiggled, sprayed, jiggled, but still nothing. I sprayed again and let it sit overnight , then this morning "click, click". WORKS PERFECTLY......... Now in addition to the "way cool" retro yellow carbon fiber bike, I have fully functioning brifters for a my newest project, a 90's Titanium VanTuyl full Ultegra TT bike that I'm converting from bullhorns to drops.(got it for $30+$10 gas).................RJ ,YOU ARE THE MAN.........

He really is! I cannot speak highly enough about him. Really really honest videos, and exceptionally clever down-to-earth-man.
And his video quality is second-to-none too. The picture quality, exposure, he uses nice light environments, uses tripods, the subject is always nicely in focus, perfect clarity every time. He gets the sound perfect too which MOST others don't. You can always hear him really clearly. His vids are just so nice to watch.
He can be a bit grumpy at times in commenting, but as a mechanic....wow, I really don't think you could find any better. Even looking at ALL of the different areas that he works with, there is not a single thing mechanically he can't put his hand to. The guy would honestly have been an asset to NASA!

Huge thanks! My Dura-Ace front derailleur down-shift lever missed the pawl 10-50% of the time. I just started riding again after my bike sat for a couple years, so this makes perfect sense. I lubed everything but the cables and shifters (flight decks) just to get riding before sundown, so the shifter was still gummed up even though it felt fine. Lubed the flight deck (didn't feel WD-40 was needed) yesterday and NAILED IT! No more missed downshifts. THANKS!

RJ, thank you for your instruction and effort. I am attemption to rehab an RSX 100 shifter (3 position), and could use some advice. The shifter is my own and hasn't been used in 10 years. The WD 40 trick worked on my other shifter and it worked on one arm of this shifter (the inside arm). It did not work on the outside arm. I removed the front cover and the cable. I can see part of the inner mechanism. The cable holder can be moved manually, and it locks into place when I do so. But it does not move in any significant way using the outer arm. I've used both WD40 and carb cleaner on it. Can you advise?

Where did I say carb cleaner??? I suggest you don't use carb cleaner as I don't know what effect it will have on the plastic parts in the shifter. You can continue flushing lubing it. Or take it apart (part way). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOh4zKoyJgg

Midnight before my first race of the season. Everything’s packed and I pull my bike down to give the chain a layer of lube to soak overnight. Panic strikes when the shifter won’t engage the gears!! I was freaking out, thinking I’d need to replace the cable.

Great video. Having trouble with my shimano tiagra shifter, though. Lost shifting on the RD. Sprayed down the shifter with wd-40 like you suggest, until it was ratcheting/clicking. Then I discovered that the cable had snapped at the shifter. I've now replaced the cable and housing to the RD, but no luck. From what I can tell, the shifter still isn't catching properly, despite the fact that it sounds like it should be. I hosed it down with some more wd-40, but still nothing. Just in case, I've sprayed down the RD with degreaser as well, and it seems to move just fine. Help?

I have a shifter that's easy to upshift but then downshifting requires a lot of force for it to un-catch. When the cables are cut it shifts easy in both directions, so I don't think it's a 'gunked up' issue. With the cables routed, it gets caught in the highest gear and only comes loose when you push down pretty hard.

@RJ The Bike Guy that video is great. I'm still stuck with a hard-to-downshift sora 3 speed. It's smooth but it can take a lot of force, especially from the large chainring to the middle chainring. I think maybe I need to tighten down some screws inside the shifter.

I had the same problem with a Tiagra 4700 shifter, I tried the fix in your video and it now works. Thanks a lot for the video. It seems that it is a common problem on this type of shfiter.

You just saved me $250, the price of a new pair of Ultegra 2x10 shifters: WD40 followed by light oil did the trick, and I didn't even need to unwrap the bar tape; just find the nub of the gear cable by sqeezing the lever and sqirt. Genius!

Nice video - I would have pulled back the STI rubber hood and covered it (and the bartape near it) before spraying WD-40. Although it's basically lithaine that spray will still leave a greasy residue on rubber.

Well, after trying this a second time today and not giving up, I succeeded in reviving a front shifter that had been locked up for maybe 10 years. I had switched to riding a hybrid but recently got motivated to use my road bike again. Now my 20-year-old GT Force, a bike I always really liked, is back on the road. Thank-you, RJ!

Same with my Firefox Fusion 2.6 (21 speed, 3 front x 7 rear), the only problem is when I shift the front gears from 1st to 2nd. Rear gears work fine.

I followed the same process but with automotive brake cleaner and followed up with silicon base chain lube.
Works perfect now.

Just tried this on my 2005 Dura Ace equipped Trek Madone 5.9. The up shifting mechanism on the rear cassette would not engage at all. Used technique shown in this video and it worked like a charm !!!!! I was certain the shifter was stripped/broken and would have to be replaced for $$$. Good ole WD-40 and Tri-Flow did the job.
