Cheer Up
Eric Bay Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Another tortured soul trying to sell his scars
Poetic tales of pain, which he hopes will help him go far
In the game of fortune and fame his lyrics speak against
Well, a hypocrite with an instrument is a hypocrite nonetheless

And so he takes to the stage with all of his rage
He don't need no one behind him
But they're not there, 'cause they don't care
As the empty stage reminds him

And so he takes his anger out
On an audience that never did anything to him
And the day he throws in the towel
We'll be singing a funeral hymn
But don't give up
All you really have to do is just cheer up

I'm sorry Cupid missed every time he took aim
And I'm sorry you ain't never been kissed
But your songs all sound the same
No one wants to hear someone complain
The only love you're gonna get
Is from the sad, depressed, and the death-obsessed
The suicidal set

And so he takes to the stage with all of his rage
He don't need no one behind him
But they're not there, 'cause they don't care
As the empty stage reminds him

And so he takes his anger out
On an audience that never did anything to him
And the day he throws in the towel
We'll be singing a funeral hymn
But don't give up
All you really have to do is just cheer up

And so he takes to the stage with all of his rage
He don't need no one behind him
But they're not there, 'cause they don't care
As the empty stage reminds him

And so he takes his anger out
On an audience that never did anything to him
And the day he throws in the towel
We'll be singing a funeral hymn
But don't give up

No he shouldn't give up
All you really have to do is just cheer up

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Eric Bay's song "Cheer Up" delve deep into the struggles of a tormented artist yearning for recognition and validation in the competitive world of music. The opening lines paint a portrait of an individual who uses their pain and suffering as a selling point, believing that sharing their poetic tales of anguish will propel them towards success and acclaim. However, there is a sense of irony in the portrayal of the artist as a hypocrite, wielding their instrument in a bid for authenticity and significance.

The singer's frustration and disillusionment with the music industry are palpable as he takes to the stage, fueled by his pent-up rage and feeling deserted by those who should have stood by him. The emptiness of the stage mirrors his sense of isolation and alienation, highlighting the harsh reality that his emotional outpourings are met with indifference or apathy. Despite this, he directs his anger towards an innocent audience, projecting his internal turmoil onto those who have done him no wrong, showcasing the destructive cycle of his own despair.

The lyrics further explore the singer's romantic setbacks and the repetitive nature of his songs, suggesting that his music is overshadowed by a relentless theme of sorrow and complaint. The mention of Cupid's failed attempts and the lack of affection in his life hint at a deeper longing for love and connection, but his artistic expressions seem to resonate more with those who are drawn to sorrow and melancholy. This dichotomy between the artist's yearning for love and his attraction to darkness adds layers to his complex persona.

Ultimately, the song ends on a note of hope and resilience, urging the singer not to give up despite the challenges and setbacks he faces. The repeated refrain of "cheer up" serves as a mantra of encouragement and a reminder that amidst the sorrow and despair, there is still a glimmer of light and potential for a brighter future. Despite his struggles and internal battles, the artist is urged to find solace in optimism and perseverance, offering a message of strength and resilience in the face of adversity.

I love this song and the point it makes. Now on all honesty, I do have have a morbid liking for the morose and dark songs of some of these artists. But at the end of the day, when melancholy and grief weigh too heavily on my ears, cheery rhythmic tunes like this one are just the perfect antidote. I'm impressed with Eric's songs. I wish i's known a couple of them at some point. Seeing how art seems to punctuate my emotional life, his songs would gave come in handy once or twice. Well he just
