Benét's father loved classical music and inspired an interest in music in his son. By his teens, Eric had formed a vocal group with his sister and cousin called "Benét." The group released a self-titled album in 1992 that sold 70,000 copies.
Also in 1992, Benét's girlfriend, Tami Stauff, gave birth to a daughter they named India. The couple's happiness was short-lived when 25-year old Tami was killed in a car accident on April 24, 1993.
In 1994, Benét signed with Warner Bros. Records, releasing his solo debut album, True to Myself, in fall (1996). His next album, A Day in the Life, was released in 1999; its first single, "Georgy Porgy (featuring Faith Evans)" received significant airplay, but the second single, "Spend My Life With You (featuring Tamia)", became a smash hit. "Spend My Life With You" rose to number one on the American R&B charts, was certified gold, and nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. The album, A Day In The Life also won a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album, Male. Benét also recorded for Earth, Wind, and Fire's 30th anniversary CD.
Benét has also been active as an actor; he had a recurring role on the television program For Your Love (1998 - 2002). He made his film debut in Glitter (2001).
Don't Let Go
Eric Benét Lyrics

Now the heat of love feels like it's starting to cool
I hear the bells, but they don't ring the way they used to
It's like breaking up is our next obvious move
But let's not move too soon, oh, no
See, the problem going 'round too often these days
People throwing in the towel once they pass the honeymoon phase
Or else we've been these years, cried these tears in vain (I'm saying)
[Chorus]
Don't let go (That's all I'm saying)
Don't let go (Ooh, girl let's stop playing)
Don't let go (Think of all the love we've been making)
Don't let go (Don't let it go)
[Verse 2]
I've worked your patience, girl and you've been working my nerves
We scream at each other, but we're not hearing one word
We've made mistakes that neither one of us deserves
Leaving much desired where I was concerned
I saw an old man and his wife early today
They were holding hands, his eyes locked in her gaze
Think of all the times they came so close to parting ways
In my mind, I could hear him say, "Stay, babe."
Don't let go (I could hear him say)
Don't let go (Don't throw the love away)
Don't let go (Aren't we worth it, baby?)
Don't let go (Don't let it go)
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
With some other girl, I could move on
Trading old problems just for new
To some other guy, you could belong
Going through changes we've been through
When another brother is trying to make a play
Don't you let go
When another woman jumps in my face
I will not let go
When the honeymoon starts fading away
I won't let go
If we're gonna make it I want to hear you say
I swear I won't let go.
[Chorus]
In Eric Benét's song Don't Let Go, the singer addresses the challenges that come with long-term relationships. The heat of love is starting to cool, and the bell of passion is no longer ringing as it did in the past, yet Benét urges his partner not to let go of the love they have. He acknowledges that it is easy for individuals to give up on their relationships once the honeymoon phase is over, but he believes that enduring through the pain would bring a stronger love. Benét reminisces about an old couple he saw holding hands and affirmed that the key to lasting love is to never let go.
In the second verse, Benét admits that he has worked his partner's patience and vice versa. They shout at each other, but neither hears a word. The couple has made mistakes that neither deserves, but Benét urges his partner not to let go. He witnessed an old couple earlier that day and realized the importance of holding onto love. Benét promises his partner that he will never let go, and he hopes to hear the same from her.
The song delivers a message of hope and perseverance in relationships. It emphasizes that it is essential not to give up on love because of the challenges that come with it. If both parties commit to enduring through the pains, their love will become stronger.
