Benét's father loved classical music and inspired an interest in music in his son. By his teens, Eric had formed a vocal group with his sister and cousin called "Benét." The group released a self-titled album in 1992 that sold 70,000 copies.
Also in 1992, Benét's girlfriend, Tami Stauff, gave birth to a daughter they named India. The couple's happiness was short-lived when 25-year old Tami was killed in a car accident on April 24, 1993.
In 1994, Benét signed with Warner Bros. Records, releasing his solo debut album, True to Myself, in fall (1996). His next album, A Day in the Life, was released in 1999; its first single, "Georgy Porgy (featuring Faith Evans)" received significant airplay, but the second single, "Spend My Life With You (featuring Tamia)", became a smash hit. "Spend My Life With You" rose to number one on the American R&B charts, was certified gold, and nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. The album, A Day In The Life also won a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album, Male. Benét also recorded for Earth, Wind, and Fire's 30th anniversary CD.
Benét has also been active as an actor; he had a recurring role on the television program For Your Love (1998 - 2002). He made his film debut in Glitter (2001).

Why do I feel like I'm trippin' why why why
I don't know what it is
Feel like I'm high like I'm trippin'
Hmm hmm hmm
This is hell a strange
I've forgot my name and I feel no pain
Can I have your lips let me take a sips so that I can trip
Another hit of what's given me this levity, levity babe
Why do I feel like I'm trippin' trippin'
You got me faded on the things that you do, fade babe
Feel like I'm high like I'm trippin' high babe
And this all because I'm trippin' on you, hey
It never felt so good to swerve
No adjectives there are no verbs
That could describe your body's curves accurately, no babe
And when your legs are in between
It's like a technicolor dream
And I lose all sense of my reality
I'm trippin' babe
Why do I feel like I'm trippin'
You got me faded on the things that you do, yes you do
Feel like I'm high like I'm trippin' high
And this all because I'm trippin' on you, trippin' baby yeah
Faded
I don't know what it is
Trippin', faded
But I don't know nothin ahead
Trippin', faded
Ain't even gonna lie
Trippin', faded
You make me feel like I can fly
Trippin'
I don't need crack cocaine Hennessey or champagne
Ain't no weed they could gave me the ecstasy, oh no no
You've got me high my control this lost, well
You're going down just break me off
You've got me trippin' trippin' trippin'
Why do I feel like I'm trippin', well well
You got me faded on the things that you do yeah
Feel like I'm high like I'm trippin', I'm high babe
And this all because I'm trippin' on you, yeah
Why do I feel like I'm trippin' oh oh
You got me faded on the things that you do
I wanna know how you'd do it babe
Feel like I'm high like I'm trippin', oh
And it's all because I'm trippin' on you
All because I'm trippin' on you
Faded
Why do I feel like
Trippin', faded
Why do I feel like
Trippin', faded
Why do I feel like
Trippin', faded
Why do I feel like
Trippin', faded
Why do I feel like
Trippin', faded
Yeah babe
Trippin', faded
So cool
Trippin', faded
Trippin'
The lyrics to Eric Benét's song "Trippin'" describe a feeling of being in a state of euphoria or intense pleasure, similar to being under the influence of drugs. The singer expresses confusion as to why they feel this way, as if they are "trippin'" or high. The song suggests that this feeling is a result of being infatuated with a particular person.
The singer compares their experience to being on drugs, saying that the person they are infatuated with is like a drug injected into their veins. They express a desire to have a taste of this person's lips in order to intensify the feeling and take another "hit" of the euphoria they bring. The mention of "levity" suggests that being with this person brings a sense of lightness and happiness.
The second verse describes the physical attraction the singer feels towards the person, using metaphors to express the intensity of their desire. They mention losing all sense of reality when their legs are intertwined with the person's, comparing it to a vivid dream. This further emphasizes how being connected with this person brings about a heightened state of pleasure and escapism.
The chorus repeats the feeling of being "trippin'" or "faded" and asks why the singer feels this way. They attribute their state of euphoria to the actions and presence of the person they are infatuated with. The repetition of these lines and the use of words like "faded" and "high" suggest that this feeling is addictive and all-consuming.
The bridge acknowledges that the singer doesn't need drugs or alcohol to feel the way they do. They claim that the person they are trippin' on has the ability to make them feel high without any external substances. The mention of being out of control and the desire to be "broken off" suggests that their infatuation is intense and overpowering.
Overall, the lyrics convey the singer's overwhelming infatuation with someone, equating it to a drug-induced state of euphoria. The song highlights the intense pleasure and escapism that can come from being deeply infatuated with someone, even without the use of actual drugs.
