Sometimes I Cry
Eric Benet(에릭 베네) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Two years since you walked away from me
Since all of our scattered dreams
Were just thrown away
I'm finally gettin' back to what I used to be
Share my pain with my family
Think I'm on my way

I can sleep at night,
I don't reach for you when I wake up
But it's taken some time
I can live my life
Without praying that we could make up
I'm movin' on, I'm feeling strong inside

But sometimes I cry, babe
When I'm all alone
With this heart of mine
Sometimes I cry, babe
Although you've been gone
For a long, long time

Heard you're moving in with someone new
I hope all your dreams come true
And you'll both be happy, yeah

Been long enough for me to take a look around
I've met a girl, we've been hangin' out
She's been good for me

But when we're makin' love
She don't take me there like you used to
And it hurts when I lie (when I lie baby)
Help me understand how to push you out,
Forget you and let you go,
'Cause Lord knows I've tried, yeah

But sometimes I cry, babe
Been at all that hurtin'
For a long, long time (yes, I have babe)
Sometimes I cry, babe
Ain't nothin' workin'
For this pain of mine

I'll just have to fake it
Until I can make it

There's a smile on my face, yeah
But I'm broken inside

Overall Meaning

In Eric Benét's song Sometimes I Cry, the lyrics describe the aftermath of a failed relationship. The singer has been working to move on from the pain caused by their former partner leaving them and breaking their dreams, but despite making progress, they still find themselves occasionally overwhelmed by their emotions. The song begins with the singer reflecting on the two years that have passed since their partner walked out on them, and how they have been gradually working to heal the wound through the support of their family and a new romantic interest. However, they admit that even though they don't reach out for their former partner when they wake up and can live independently without them, there are still moments when they feel alone and cry when no one is around.

The second half of the song introduces the complication of the ex-partner moving on with someone new. The singer claims to want nothing but happiness for them both, but also acknowledges that it's difficult to watch someone move on when they themselves are still struggling to let go. The verse also highlights the fact that despite the singer's new relationship with another person, they still feel unfulfilled and unable to emotionally connect with their new partner in the same way they did with their former lover. The song ends on a note of resignation, with the singer admitting that even though they're putting on a brave face, they're still heartbroken inside.

Overall, the lyrics to Sometimes I Cry provide a nuanced insight into the complicated emotions that come with heartbreak and moving on. The singer is not portrayed as a victim or a villain, but rather as a person trying their best to manage their feelings and find happiness in the face of loss.

Also, in Debarge - I Like It, more than half the song is falsetto. Including some of the highest notes at the end of the song I’ve heard from a male artist.

I always say, If men weren't meant to cry, then God wouldn't have gave us the ability to do so. Sadness is a very real emotion and there's absolutely nothing wrong with shedding a tear every now and then. No matter what society or anyone says.

Very beautiful and true!
