Had to Cry Today
Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's already written that today will be one to remember
The feeling's the same as being outside of your door
Had to cry today
Well I saw your sign and I missed you there
I'm taking the chance to see the wind in your eyes while I listen
You say you can't reach me but you want everyone to be free

Overall Meaning

These lyrics from Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood's song, Had to Cry Today, reflect the emotions of the singer who is reminiscing about a past experience that left them feeling emotional. The singer acknowledges that the memory of that day will stay with them forever, and that the emotions they felt that day are comparable to the feeling of being outside someone's door; the anticipation and uncertainty of what lies on the other side.

The line "Had to cry today" suggests that the singer was moved to tears by whatever happened that day. The next line implies that the singer was hoping to see someone when they visited a certain location, but they were disappointed to find that the person was not there. Despite this disappointment, the singer takes a moment to appreciate the environment and the natural elements around them. They take in the wind and focus on the eyes of the person they were hoping to see.

The final line, "You say you can't reach me but you want everyone to be free," is a bit ambiguous but seems to convey a message of hope and freedom. The person the singer was looking for might not have been able to physically or emotionally reach out to the singer, but they want everyone to experience a sense of liberation and independence.

Four of the best guitarists currently working today sharing the stage. Yea, it doesn't really get any better than this. Phenomenal.

Steve Winwood sounds almost exactly as he did when the album first came out in 1969. (That's when I got it on vinyl.) Very few people can cover their own material from 45 years ago and sound just as they did back in the day. Hats off to Mr. Winwood.

+ironpirites Winwood was singing for Spencer Davis group in the very early 1960's too. I'm a Man, Gimme Some Lovin' , Keep On Running etc, etc.

Better! Particularly than what they could do live then.

Blind Faith was a great band. Got to see them several times in the early 70s. They didn't last long sadly.

You can see why Clapton wanted so badly to get together with Winwood again :) That classic riff of theirs is so unbeatable...you just want to hear it over and over again :) I'm so glad there are recordings to preserve such greatness as these performances :) <3

Blind faith: best band Clapton ever had!! The magic lasted for a half album and the thing was gone... what a singer Steve Winwood is!!!!!
