Skylark
Eric Marienthal Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Have you anything to say to me?
Won't you tell me where my love can be?
Is there a meadow in the mist
Where someone's waiting to be kissed?
Skylark
Have you seen a valley green with spring?
Over the shadows and the rain
To a blossom covered lane
And in your lonely flight
Haven't you heard the music in the night?
Wonderful music, faint as a will o' the wisp
Crazy as a loon, sad as a gypsy serenading the moon
Oh skylark
I don't know if you can find these things
But my heart is riding on your wings
So if you see them anywhere
Won't you lead me there?
Oh skylark
I don't know if you can find these things
But my heart is riding on your wings
So if you see them anywhere
Won't you lead me there?
The song Skylark by Eric Marienthal is a lyrical plea to a bird, the Skylark, asking it to guide the singer to where their lost love can be found. The Skylark represents hope, a sign of positive change, and a catalyst for emotions that the singer has been unable to express. The first verse introduces the bird and its symbolic power, with the singer asking if it can help them find their love. The second verse describes the ideal setting for their love, a meadow in the mist or a blossom-covered lane.
The refrain repeats the singer's request for help, with the Skylark becoming a metaphor for opportunity and a guide to a better future. The bridge highlights the beauty of the world around us, with music as a connecting force. The Skylark's isolation is emphasized, and it becomes a figure of sadness and longing.
The final verse implores the Skylark to find the lost love, with the singer placing their hopes and dreams on the bird's wings. The song ends on a note of uncertainty, leaving the listener to imagine whether the Skylark will prove to be the singer's savior. The song's ambiguous ending reinforces the idea that hope is important, but it may not always be enough to bring about our desired outcomes.
