Zyé an mwen sé lapli
Kè an mwen sé mépri
Pawôl mwen sé soufè
Zyé an mwen sé fizi
Dèpi mwen tou piti
Mal... ou wo mwen ni mal
Yo di mwen nou sé frè
Yo di nou té fanmi
Jis'tan mwen vin' pati
Rivé Paris pa ka ri ban mwen
Fwadi fè yo oubliyé sé moun' an ba la
Mal... ou wo mwen ni mal
Hey! Dômi dèwô dan pawôl, dan dawa
Hey! Èvè vou mèm' pawo sali pwôp' san aw
Awa! Awa!
Mal... ou wo mwen ni mal
Dé lè'w ka sonjé lanmè
Sonjé fanmi, zanmi
Sonjé malè é sa'w ja manké
É ou ka sonjé, sonjé sa
Mé mwen ja las' règrété
Navigué lanmè mové
É sonjé doulè, sa'w ja soufè
Ja lè pou mwen rivé
Ja lè pou mwen vansé...
(Oh... oh... oh mwen ni, mwen ni mal, mal, mal
The lyrics to Erik's song "Mal" express feelings of heartache, betrayal, and pain. The first verse talks about how the singer's eyes are full of rain and their heart is filled with mistreatment, while their words are full of sighs. The second verse talks about how the singer was told they were family and friends, but they were quickly forgotten once they left for Paris. The chorus then repeats the word "mal" which translates to "pain" in English. The bridge of the song encourages the listener to remember the good times with loved ones but also hints at regret for past mistakes and moving forward.
The lyrics of "Mal" connect to universal themes of heartbreak and disappointment. Erik conveys these feelings through simple, evocative phrases, such as "my eyes are full of rain" and "my heart is mistreated." The use of repetition in the chorus, "mal... you see me in pain," reinforces the emotional weight of the song's message. Additionally, the song's bridge serves as a call to action for listeners to reflect on their own relationships and memories.
