I Break Things
Erika Jo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I broke most of Mama's dishes
She banned me from the kitchen when I was a kid
And I tore Daddy's truck to pieces
Left it in a heap that no mechanic could fix

You don't believe me - I can see you laughin'
But trust me, I'm an accident
A'waitin' here to happen

'Cause I break things - anything I touch
I just get around 'em and I'm bound to tear 'em up
Yeah, I make things snap and fall apart
So if you want to hold me boy, you better watch your
heart
'Cause I break things

You say I'm nothin' you can't handle
You're tougher than an anvil
Oh baby we'll see
I'm like a wreckin' ball comin'
You're better off runnin' far away from me

Don't get me wrong,
Now baby I adore you
It's only right that I give you fair warning

"Cause I break things, anything I touch
I just get around 'em and I'm bound to tear 'em up
Yeah, I make things snap and fall apart
So if you want to hold me boy, you better watch your
heart
'Cause I break things

Rain is wet, the desert is dry
That's the way it'll always be
And fire is hot, it's dark at night'The sun comes up in the east

And I break things, anything I touch
I just get around 'em and I'm bound to tear 'em up
Yeah, I make things snap and fall apart
So if you want to hold me boy, you better watch your
Heart
Because I break things

Mmmm, I break things

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Erika Jo's song "I Break Things" depict the singer's self-awareness of her tendency to be destructive in her actions and relationships. She uses vivid imagery to portray instances of her breaking things, such as breaking her mother's dishes and tearing her father's truck into pieces. She acknowledges that some people may not believe her, but she knows that she is an "accident waiting to happen." This self-awareness could be interpreted as a cry for help or a warning to any potential partners to be cautious in getting involved with her romantically.

The chorus of the song emphasizes her destructive tendencies, as she sings about breaking anything she touches and making things snap and fall apart. She warns her love interest that if he wants to stay with her, he better watch his heart because she may break it too. Despite these warnings, the singer still feels a deep sense of affection for her love interest, as she sings "Don't get me wrong, now baby I adore you." This ambiguity is what makes the song so powerful, as it showcases the inner turmoil of someone struggling with their own sense of self-destructiveness and desire for companionship.

Overall, "I Break Things" is a hauntingly beautiful song that speaks to the darker side of human nature. It illustrates the fragility of relationships and the importance of self-awareness when it comes to our own tendencies towards destruction.

Erika, I have in Canada what would be called a part 15 station in the USA and "I Break Things" is permanently in rotation on my playlist! I don't understand any negativity you get. The song should have been a hit.

@zeldafreak1975

Been a few years, but it seems obvious to me she's chosen not to be part of the satanic music industry. She's clearly more talented than most if not all the ones signed and out even now. Respect to her for that!

@paytonpryor

I remember being a kid watching you perform live in Columbus GA at the Riverwalk. Good memories.
