Underground
Esau Lyrics

[Esau]
All these kids today screaming underground, do they know what it means
To make 7 albums, work everyday and go hungry just to chase your dreams
To be number one in Gavin, CMJ, Impact and BRE
Then have to beg a promoter to open up for Run-D.M.C.
Nah, I don't think so, my shit's fat too, so is his
But is there room for all of us in the shady rap biz
Put your 12's out yourself, push it, beg the pd
to play it and chart it, then maybe some kids will hear of you in NYC
Or LA, or college in Tennessee or maybe it'll reach overseas
To Italy and maybe even to the heads in the military
If you're lucky, you're website will get 10 hits a day
and Pizzo will sell your stuff online the hiphopsite.com way
Even them cats at footwork will rock it or play da record in t dot
Mr Bongo in London or all the HMV's in Oz
But until then keep posting up at Davy D and rhyming over others beats
Until you get the knowledge kid, you won't know what underground means

HOOK

You ain't underground cause you're white, or just cause you're black
You ain't underground cause you recorded your album on a 4 track
You ain't underground cause your beats are wack, or even if they're fat
You ain't underground simply cause your shit is abstract
You ain't underground cause you don't cypher,
you ain't underground cause you do
You ain't underground cause you can freestyle and roll with a tight crew
You ain't underground with no airplay
You ain't underground with MTV play
You ain't underground cause 4 kids bump your shit out in Tampa Bay
You ain't underground cause you don't buy mixtapes
You ain't underground cause you do
You ain't underground cause you own every tape by Touch and Clue
You ain't underground cause you're on the net
You ain't underground when you dub cassettes
You ain't underground cause you buy vinyl to rock on your 1200 set
You ain't underground cause you post lyrics
You ain't underground cause you dis them
You ain't underground cause you hate EPMD or even if you missed them
You ain't underground cause you're unknown
You ain't underground if you're unsigned
You ain't underground cause you analyze lyrics in Company Flow rhymes
You ain't underground cause you like Sugarhill
You ain't underground cause you keep it real
You ain't underground cause you do or do not deal
You ain't underground cause you use big words
You ain't underground if you don't curse
You ain't underground cause you get creative with your adverbs
You ain't underground cause you use metaphors, or if you bore
You ain't underground cause you don't have product in any major stores
You ain't underground, yeah I said it
You ain't underground, don't forget it
You ain't underground because your wack ass CD ain't selling

Overall Meaning

In the song Underground by Esau, he addresses the misconception of what it means to be an underground artist. He lists various reasons why someone is not automatically considered an underground artist, including being white or black, recording on a 4 track, having wack or abstract beats, cyphering or not cyphering, freestyling, airplay, MTV play, having fans in a certain area, buying or not buying mixtapes, and owning every tape by Touch and Clue. Esau emphasizes that being underground requires hard work and dedication, including making seven albums, going hungry to chase one's dreams, getting airplay by pushing and charting one's album, and being lucky enough for one's website to get ten hits a day. Until an artist gets this knowledge, they won't truly understand what it means to be underground.

Overall, by highlighting what doesn't make an artist underground, Esau emphasizes the hard work, dedication, and perseverance required to be considered truly underground. He points out that being underground is not about one's race, equipment, or whether one buys mixtapes, but rather about the effort and struggle needed to make it in the rap industry. The message of the song is clear: being underground requires a lot of effort and dedication to one's craft, and it's not about superficial factors like race or the type of equipment one uses.

@David Bruce We were all taught to hate Esau, so I can understand your position of hatred toward Esau.
But I am challenging you to re-read the whole story - without the lean toward Jacob being the righteous one.
Take a departure from the shallow explanations we were taught that are further reinforced by the commentaries in each of our Bibles.
You may realize that you have been hoodwinked into thinking differently from Isaac in his day and time and then also different from Abraham himself.
To start, study from the ancient book of Jasher (referenced by the book of Judges and also referenced in Jude) where the stories mentioned briefly in Genesis are more fully told in the book of Jasher. (Genesis simply represents the geneology given to Moses to teach Israel (Jacob's children) their lineage).
The book of Jasher is the book of history, still with a leaning toward Jacob, but with enough scraps to fill in the gaps left by just reading Genesis only.
All this to say - there is more to the story!! Abraham had his own dealings with Nimrod - the legendary "ruler of the world" and tyrant mentioned in the bible including his tower of babel. Nimrod had been told that a descendant of Abraham would one day destroy him or his kingdom. Abraham escaped Nimrods grasps as an infant (similar story to that of Jesus and the prophesies about a king told to Harod, and Harod sought to destroy the infant Jesus).
Therefore Abram was hidden away with his mother Amthella, who covertly returned to her father's house (this was no other than Shem's household shared with his father Noah.)
Nimrod requested that Terah bring his child of the star to him (to kill) so Terah brought his servants infant to Nimrod whom Nimrod then killed in order to destroy the prophecy from coming true.
So you understand then, that Abraham was essentially raised by Noah, Shem and his mother Amthella, in the house of Shem. Abraham returned to his Father's house in Ur at the age of 50. Where the story of Abraham in Genesis begins.
Later in time, Esau killed Nimrod during a hunt. As a result - Esau feared being killed by Nimrods army. Esau thought he was going to die, for he had just reached his parents home where Jacob also dwelled. Esau hid the garments of Adam and Eve that Nimrod had been wearing during his hunt. (If anyone asks, I will share the story which I call "the hairy garment", back to the story... Esau was hungry and feared death, but not death from hunger, but instead he feared Nimrods soldiers following him home and would surely kill him. Jacob took this opportunity to negotiate with Esau over his birthright, which seemed in paril anyway. "What good is my birthright if I am dead?" ~Esau.

There is so much more to be told for those that have ears to hear...

@Ria a
You are right to be skeptical!
Esau was blessed while Jacob's descendants went into slavery in Egypt.
Esau was given plenty of health and wealth by God. Esau is a representative of Adam. While Jacob is known as the trickster.
Esau followed the ways of Abraham, not the ways of Haron (Aaron). Haron was Abraham's brother who had taken over for his dad Terah, who had been a priest of Nimrods kingdom and fertility religion.
Esau's connection to Adam is the applied term "Red" also associated to king David as "Ruddy". Adam was created from the red earth. Esau is given Edom, a place of the red dirt.
In the story about Rebekah and Isaac (the mom and dad of Esau and Jacob) Rebekah is barren (can't have children) and she wants to revert to her families fertility religion for help by going to a temple in Egypt. (The Bible says it was due to famine that they went to Egypt- but they had been told not to go to Egypt). But they went to Egypt anyway with Isaac pretending to be Rebekah's brother and Rebekah got taken into the kingdom and became engaged to the prince until the prince saw Rebekah and Isaac frolicking in the courtyard of the palace. The prince became outraged and sent them away from the kingdom... But Rebekah was now pregnant with twins.
When they struggled in her womb, she was told there was two nations in her belly.
That means two different daddy's.
The struggle is legendary, but few know the meaning of it all - the key is similar to the issue of Cain and Abel. Cain being the seed of the Serpent and Eve, while Able was the seed of Adam and Eve.
Esau was a hero in his time, he was given wives in the traditions of his times, first wife from his uncle Ishmael, then from surrounding kingdoms as a reward, because Esau killed their enemy Amraphael (aka: Nimrod, the one known whose tower fell; Ham-Rah-Fell).

Esau sold his birth right to Jacob because when Esau went hunting, he found Nimrod.
Esau got the upper hand of Nimrod, and killed him and his two guards.

If a great hunter goes hunting, comes back empty handed and says he’s famished and will die????
That’s weird. Makes zero logical sense.
A great hunter wouldn’t ever come back empty handed. He’d also know how to survive.

Esau killed Nimrod, the empirical ruler, he’d have had thousands of people wanting him dead.

Nimrod had the loin cloths of Adam and Eve. Since Esau acquired those, no birt right needed there.

Like if you went hunting in North Korea, saw Kim Jong and two guys, and made that a subtraction problem. But, you’d have to escape North Korea afterwards

Most excellent series and segment. Well done, well presented and more importantly and interestingly, great questions to ponder upon.

The story of Isaac preferring Esau over Jacob but then naming Jacob as his heir has parallels in other myths. In Mesopotamian mythology the goddess Inanna originally prefers Enkidu the farmer but then chooses Dumuzi the shepherd. In another Mesopotamian myth, the god Enlil chooses the farmer god Enten over the shepherd god Emesh. In Roman mythology, the gods favored Romulus over his brother Remus. Also, in the Bible, God chooses Abel over Cain. Perhaps these types of myths, particularly the one about Inanna, Enkidu and Dumuzi, could be compared to love triangle stories, for example, in Arthurian legend, Queen Guinevere chooses Sir Lancelot over her husband King Arthur in an affair. In Welsh mythology, the femme fatale Blodeuwedd chooses Gronw Pebr over her husband the sun god Lleu Llaw Gyffes in an affair.

Cain and Abel as well, it’s an allegory for humanity going from hunter gatherer to agrarian which leads to empire

I heard a theory that when Esau came for the stew from Jacob his hunt was actually the killing of Nimrod; therefore Esau was literally fearing for his life & figured he was already dead considering whom he had killed. Esau's thought selling his birthright was a non-issue since he figured his life was forfeit anyway considering whom he had hunted. So what was selling his birthright for some stew in the such a situation?

I read that story also and agree. Although, something that monumental you think would’ve have been mentioned. Aside from that, he wasn’t “going to die” just because he was hungry, that is just a figure of speech people use all the time.

Real American Negro

He was exhausted from that battle. You have to read the story for yourself. Its extremely easy to follow

likeaSparrow inTheWilderness

that wouldn't work out well if you understand the legal procedure of birthright from a spiritual perspective

(There is a Jewish tradition stemming from the Talmud, that the descendants of Esau would eventually become the Romans, and to a larger extent, all Europeans.)
