Black Roses
Escondido Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

White dress blows in the wind
And the dust whips up all of those memories of you once again
Oh darling, once again

A silence, a hush so complete
Just the bell of the church ringing out in the street
All for you, oh darling, is it you?
'Cause all the black roses speak of you
'Cause all the black roses speak of you

When a whisper still floats around
All the heads are hung low and my friends are nowhere to be found
Oh darling, is it you?

To be young, to be just at the start
When all that you know is a longing to lay down your heart
Oh darling, it was you

'Cause all the black roses speak of you
All the black roses speak of you
'Cause all the black roses speak of you
All the black roses speak of you

Speak of you
Speak of you

Overall Meaning

In Escondido's song Black Roses, the singer is haunted by memories of a past love. The song opens with the image of a white dress blowing in the wind, which brings back memories of the person she used to love. The next line "And the dust whips up all of those memories of you once again" emphasizes the idea that these memories are being forced upon her through the external environment. Despite the pain and heartbreak, she seems to be unable to escape thinking about this person.

The second verse creates a sense of reminiscent isolation. The singer is surrounded by a complete silence, except for the sound of a church bell ringing in the distance. The lyric "All for you, oh darling, is it you?" suggests that the ringing of the bell is somehow connected to the past love, as if it is signaling the end of the relationship. In the third verse, the love story is framed in the context of youth, a time when love is all consuming and all that one yearns for is to love and to be loved. The chorus is repeated twice in the song, repeating the same sentiment that the black roses symbolize the past love.

Overall, the song's lyrics are haunting and reflective, illustrating the emotional pain and confusion that comes with lost love. Through images like the white dress and the ringing bell, the lyrics create a sense of loneliness and longing.

Immaculate.

@GH-cy6fh

I think what I like the most about the video is the shot of Maros' face going back and forth in front of the sun. It's like I want her to stay in front of the sun, but then she won't. I think that's expressive...lol New favorite band!
