Who's Sorry Now?
Esquivel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who's Sorry Now?
Who's Sorry Now?
Who's heart is aching for breaking each vow?
Who's sad and blue?
Who's crying too?
Just like I cried over you.
Right to the end,
Just like a friend,
I tried to warn you somehow.

You had your way,
Now you must pay;

Overall Meaning

Esquivel's song "Who's Sorry Now?" is a classic example of a broken hearted love song. The song is about heartbreak and betrayal in a relationship where promises were made but not kept. The opening lines of "Who's sorry now?" grab the listener's attention, instantly giving a feeling of disappointment and resentment in one's tone. The song continues with a series of questions asking who is the one responsible for the pain and hurt caused by the relationship, who's heart is aching, and who is sad and blue, just like the singer who cried over the person he/she loved. In the end, the singer states that the person who caused the pain will have to pay the price for breaking promises.

The song speaks to a universal experience of heartbreak, where one party had to bear the consequences of the other's actions. The singer acknowledges that he/she tried to warn the other person but the warnings were ignored, leading to the current state of sadness and heartbreak. The lyrics, therefore, create a sense of accountability for one's actions, and the pain that they cause to others. The song's melancholic tune and lyrics connect with anyone who has been through a similar experience of a failed relationship and the feeling of betrayal and loss that follows.

Why the game never told us straight forward Who's Lila?
It has 15 normal endings. We didn't see the hidden ones, and there might be more clues.
But still, after 15 endings, it's hard to explain exactly what it is.

Have no clues about the prince, queen in the boiler, or creepy guy at the lake who is laughing like Ganondorf.
But there are some facts we saw in this game.

Father Lawrence and his cult made Lila, which has the same traits as Tolpa. She lived even after all the members of the cult were gone because Yu knew about her.
That means she can survive if there's anyone who knows about her by parasiting on people's minds and consuming their feelings to live.
And Lila took over William's body and did some horrible things before and throughout the game.
She's evil, that's for sure.

If we can beat this game by figuring out exactly who Lila is, I'm not so sure we can do that.
Maybe I can figure out more if I play this game by myself. But I don't know.
To me, it feels like developers ask a question that has no answer. Like 'MacGuffin'
Maybe not being curious about who Lila is is the best way to end the game. Or just laugh at the funny faces we can make.

So an answer to the question "Who's Lila?" would be, "She's an evil character, and that's all I need to know. I'm gonna watch other vods on Kronii's channel."

It hurt my brain, but I had a really fun time with today's streaming. Figuring out and investigating mysterious beings feels thrilling and exciting.
Even the color match makes it more immersive. Great job.

Now I'm heading to get some burgers like you did at the party.
Skipping lunch made me hungry, but it was definitely worth it.
Glad the party was okay. From what you've been telling me the last few days, you would have looked amazing.
I mean, there are a lot of unknowns that I have to fill in with my imagination, but I'm pretty sure you were the star of the party that day.

If I was there, I would definitely feel that way.

Ok, rest well. See you next week!
See you later.

@BarelySocial

Thank you for the stream Kronii! It's really nice seeing you be invested in the story like this!
As for my personal take for what the story is:

SPOILERS:
I only tuned in sporadically, so there might be some stuff I'm missing, but what I think the big reveal is that most, if not all of the stories were made to just gather more attention and intrigue for Lila. That's why no clear answer is given for "Who's Lila?" Because if an answer is given, we'll stop thinking about the question and in turn stop thinking about Lila. Yu even says it himself where he loves mysteries like this and wants to keep digging into it. The devilish trick is that the definitive answer doesn't exist, and we will torture ourselves trying to figure out a truth that isn't out there. This in turn feeds and empowers Lila even more. The funny thing is that this is still just a theory that can be disproven, but the fact that this theory can be disproven ALSO lends credence to this theory as well (if that even makes sense).

It's like an SCP I remember reading about where it's a bunch of horror stories with cliffhangers. It promises to explain it all at the end, but the final story jumpscares you and tells you that you "died." The point of the stories weren't to explain, but to gain intrigue. Now that we've played/watched the game, Lila will now live like a brain parasite in our minds from now on. We may be able to forget about her temporarily, but it will be just like how Will was able to forget about Lila until he met Tanya. 5 years from now we could just randomly hear the name Lila and immediately think about all of this all over again.

@Soren_Hex

Completely meaningless headshop 'mystical' iconography with zero plot relevance shoved front and center at random points because it's like deep and stuff bro?
Check.
Reliance on shock value instead of emotional investment for payoffs?
Check.
Lazy stock animation assets thinly disguised behind some kind of 'artsy totally doing this on purpose' filter?
Check.
Abundance of alternate endings because the writer wasn't competent enough to generate one that was satisfying?
Check.
Unearned 4th wall breaks?
Check.
Incoherent plot also trying to hide behind a 'totally doing this on purpose' façade?
Unlimited Check Works.

This experience was second only to Getting Over It as an example of hack game devs at work... I consider it a token of Kronii's love for us that she endured it for such a long stream.

@AgentofShield11

This game turned out more thought provoking than the goofy Mario 64 face mechanic made it out to be! The whole mystery surrounding the truth about Lila and the characters she impacted really got me hooked, not to mention the 4th wall breaks like with the Twitter account and PDFs! The way I see it, if Lila grows stronger the more people know her, she’s kinda like a virus. If one were to eradicate the virus, one would have to remove all the “infected”, so it makes sense how she would be seen as terrifying by Detective Yu (also referring to us, the players). Perhaps that’s what drew the detective into pursuing this particular case to begin with. Gives me Agent Smith from Matrix 2 vibes if you catch my drift. Maybe not the most precise theory, but even after getting all the endings, Lila still feels like an endless book meant to be completed by the players’ speculations. Thank you for the fun stream tonight, Kronii! Take care!

@DominyWaKimodebu

Now that we've all seen this stream... Lila is inside all of our minds. 🙂

@Pain-And-Gain

Due to work and personal matters, It is hard to keep up with everyone's streaming schedule on HoloEN, so I rather watch clips or shorts.
Precisely eight days ago, while at work, I had a got feeling to revisit some of Matpat's (from GTLive) old videos about horror games, which were from a year ago. Among them, I saw the 'Who's Lila' gameplay on his channel, which I had previously watched a year ago.

Exactly 20 hours ago, I decided to watch it again, subsequently installed the game, and played it. Currently, I am checking some walkthroughs on YouTube because I am stuck at a certain point in the game. To my astonishment, I discovered that Nerissa had played the game eight days ago and Kronii had played it 20 hours ago.

Something very peculiar has happened, and I am at a loss to explain it. You might suspect that I am making stuff up, but really I am not. Quite frankly, I am currently in a state of shock and confusion right now.

@NJDJ1986

nearly 6 hours of Who's Lila! great stream tonight Kronii! have a good evening!

@egreogre

I feel like that final conversation was as direct as this game could get. With a slight change of wording: "This game was always designed to be just about explainable, but smaller contradictions and unspoken details prevent the full picture from being formed." In other words, the point of the mystery was to appear just solvable enough to hold our attention without relinquishing it by actually being solvable. But maybe I'm just too cynical.

@hunkirii

Nah, i agree with you in this one

@reginaldmeta2762

I believe this is the right answer. For Lila to be kept alive in people's (the players' and audiences') minds, she tried to strike a balance of interesting and compelling story, BUT with loose ends to keep them remembering her, to keep them coming back to her.

@erhanjpg1467

The point of Lila is that you have to keep thinking about her, and if you end up with a satisfactory answer on what or who she is, she’ll stop existing in your head because you’ll not be thinking about her.

@kikuraged1815

So it’s similar to THE GAME?

@guy_th18

yeah that's explicitly stated to the be point in post-game content
