ke stiate in penitencia
del forte rinproverio
agiatene temenca
ke l'alto Dio del cielo
farane la sententia
la ove tucti seremo.
apare in oriente,
cosi il nostro segnore
aparera veracemente;
verra con tal splendore
che'l vedra tutta gente,
ciascun n'avera tremore.
Fier raunati atorno
l'anime a quatro venti.
Ad un suono di corno
seranno risorgenti
quanto okio da un crollo
fiervi tutte genti
quelle di tutto 'l mondo.
Elli aparra sul trono
della maestade
per iudicare coloro
ke vi fece invitare.
Quando udier lo suono
non vennero al mangiare
et manderalli in duolo.
The Italian lyrics of Estampie's song "A Voi Gente" describe a solemn call for repentance and a warning of the judgment to come. The singer implores the people to enter into penitence, to have fear in the face of the strong reproach that they will face from the Lord, who will deliver a sentence that will affect everyone. The second verse compares the coming of the Lord to the rising of the sun in the East, and assures that he will come with such splendor that all will tremble in awe. The third verse speaks of the souls gathered from all over the world, resurrected at the sound of a horn, and the fourth describes the Lord appearing on his throne to judge those that were invited to the banquet but did not attend. The song ends with a warning that those who do not answer the call to repentance will be sent to suffer.
The lyrics of "A Voi Gente" were written in medieval Italian, also known as old Tuscan, a regional variant of the Italian language that originated in Tuscany. The song was composed by the German medieval music ensemble Estampie, which was formed in 1985 in Munich. The song is part of a collection of medieval music known as the Codex Buranus, which was discovered in 1803 in the Bavarian Benedictine abbey of Benediktbeuern. The Codex Buranus contains more than 200 poems and songs written in medieval Latin and medieval German. "A Voi Gente" is the only song in the Codex Buranus written in Italian.
