A Taste Of Honey
Esther Ofarim Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cold winds may blow o? er the icy sea
But I'll take with me
The warmth of thee
A taste of honey,
A taste much sweeter than wine
I will return... I will return
I'll come back
For the honey and you

I leave behind
My heart to wear
And may it e? er remind you of
A taste of honey
A taste much sweeter than wine
I will return... I will return

I'll come back
For the honey and you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Esther Ofarim's song "A Taste Of Honey" explore the dynamics of love, longing, and separation. The opening lines describe the harsh weather conditions, with cold winds blowing over the icy sea. However, the warmth of the person she loves will accompany her, providing solace and comfort. The lyrics compare the sweetness of love to honey, which is much sweeter than wine. The singer acknowledges the distance that separates them but promises to return one day for the honey and the person she loves. In the second verse, she leaves her heart behind as a reminder of the taste of honey, hoping that her lover will remember her and the sweetness of their love.

The song's theme of separation and longing is a classic motif in music and literature, but Esther Ofarim's rendition presents these emotions in a unique and personal way. The lyrics express a sense of melancholy and nostalgia, but also a deep sense of commitment and affection. The image of honey represents the sweetness and richness of life, and the desire to savor every moment of it with the person one loves. Overall, the song captures the bittersweet experience of love and the power of memory to keep it alive.

Shes a great singer, I remember she featured regularly in the UK in late 60s early 70s.....always wondered why does she leave out the entire end section of this song?

Stephen Douglas

Very likely because in those days a pop song was expected by producers to last less than 3 minutes to be played on the radio! The Beatles, who wrote this tune in their early days, were the ones to break this mould - and had done already - but some commercially minded producers may have wanted to play safe. It's my guess.
