Come Up And See Me Sometime
Ethel Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here am I, I'm laying all my cards upon the table
I'll be on the level just as far as I am able
Open up the goods and I will let you see the label
I'm strictly on the up and up

I've got a lot, a lot of what I've got
And what I've got's all mine
I could spare a little share of what I've got, for you
Come up and see me sometime

You'll get a break, a lot o' give and take
I've got a brand new line
Maybe you would like me to explain it all to you
Come up and see me sometime

Come up tonight
I think the papers say the moon will be bright
They should've had it in the columns and all
Letters, that's all
That you'll be falling for me

'Cause I am free and you appeal to me
How could it be a crime?
If you don't have my number,
Well, my number's in the book
Come up and see me sometime

I've got a lot, a lot of what I've got
And what I've got's all mine
I could spare a little share of what I've got, for you
Come up and see me sometime

You'll get a break, a lot o' give and take
I've got a brand new line
Maybe you would like me to explain it all to you
Come up and see me sometime

Come up tonight
I think the papers say the moon will be bright
They should've had it in the columns and all
Letters, that's all
That you'll be falling for me

'Cause I am free and you appeal to me
How could it be a crime?
If you don't have my number,
Well, my number's in the book
Come up and see me sometime

Come up and see me sometime
Anytime

I believe that everyone in life should have a mission.
Making people happy is the height of my ambition.
When I get them happy, well, they stay in that condition,
‘Cause I have a system all my own.

I’ve got a lot, a lot is what I got,
And what I got’s all mine.
And I assure you I can cure you when you’re feelin blue.
Come up and see me sometime.

I’m always in, keeps plenty gin, I’m ready rain or shine.
I’ll bet you you’ll be in a different mood before I’m through.
Come up and see me sometime.

You’ll be at ease.
You can relax and stay as long as you please.
Just bring a needle for my talking machine.
Haha, get what I mean?
And we can dance in between.

I’ll make the fire as warm as you desire.
A cold room is a crime.
If you don’t get my meaning then you’re dumb as you can be.
Come up and see me sometime.

They say they’re hot out there on that movie lot.
Now, really, that’s a crime
Please wire Mae West, tell her stay west, she’s an eskimo.
Come up and see Waters sometime.

These gals with it make me laugh, they don’t worry me a bit.
I’m hip to them tryin to steal my lines.
And I’ll bet a fat man I’ve forgotten more than them dames will ever know.
If you’re in doubt, come up and see me sometime.

It’s just too bad for any man who brags in my presence that he can’t be had.
You know why he’s bragging? He just can’t take it, he’s not clever enough.
He ain’t so tough when I’m interested enough to start doing my stuff.
So take my advice, and bring along some ice.
And you’ll find out why the torrid zone has such a temperature.
Come up and see me sometime.

I forgot, you better get the family doctor’s okay, the pressure will be kinda hard when you come up and see me that time.

Wow, Ethel Waters' rendition  of "Come Up and See Me Sometimes"   is simply wonderful! Her  reference  to Mae West is fun.  West acknowledged  her debt  to African American influences in developing her singing style, and sadly  due to  overt racism Ethel Waters didn't have the opportunities  open to her for mass exposure.  To West's credit she insisted on including as many African Americans as she could in her films. Mae sister, Beverly West was quite a good blues singer in her own right, and can be heard on Youtube as Beverly Arden singing on a collection financed by Mae. It is fascinating just how many common threads run through the fabulous music of this era. Thank you so much for posting this gem!

@Rajnoma

Just fabulous! Ethel Waters was a liberated lady way ahead of her time! Hooray for this wonderful actress and singer! I believe she has an autobiography, "His Eye Is On the Sparrow".

@SatchmoSings

All done in one take on one track; so totally self-assured and so utterly well done. And what's even better is that Waters was a lesbian!
