The Love You Save May Be Your Own
Etta James Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm talking to all the lovers in the house tonight
Now listen, you know I want you to find out what's wrong
And get it right, or you should leave love alone
Because the love you save, it might be your own

People, I've been misled and I've been afraid
I've been hit in the head, ohh, and left for dead
I've been abused, woah and I've been accused
Been refused a piece of bread

But I ain't never in my life before
Seen so many love affairs go wrong as I do today

I want you to stop, find out what's wrong
Get it right or leave love alone
Because the love you save today
May very well be your own

I've been pushed around, oh yeah, and I've been lost and found
Given the sundown to get out of town
I've been taken outside, oh and I've been brutalized
I had to always be the one to smile and apologize

But I ain't never in my life before
Seen so many love affairs go wrong as I do today

I want you to stop, find out what's wrong
Get it right or leave love alone

Because the love you save today
Might very well be your own

Overall Meaning

The Love You Save May Be Your Own is a song by Etta James that talks about the importance of appreciating and valuing love. The lyrics are a warning to all lovers who may have taken their relationships for granted or have not prioritized them enough. Etta James starts by addressing all the lovers in the house, urging them to find out what's wrong in their relationships and fix it or leave love alone. She emphasizes that the love you save may be your own, meaning, if you don't put in the effort to make your relationship work or treat your partner right, you might lose them, and it will be your own fault.

Etta James then goes on to share her experiences, including being misled, afraid, hit in the head and left for dead, abused, accused, and refused a piece of bread. She explains that she has been pushed around, lost and found, given the sundown to get out of town, taken outside, and brutalized. Despite all this, she has never seen so many love affairs go wrong as she does today. She then implores lovers to stop, find out what's wrong in their relationships, and fix it before it's too late.

The song is a cautionary tale that warns against taking love for granted. It stresses the importance of communication and working on relationships to prevent them from falling apart. Etta James's powerful voice and emotive delivery make the song a powerful testament to the importance of love in our lives.

Bobby was best pals with Robert Cray in high school, they played in a band together then. I always thought Bobby was more of serious blues man than Robert was at the time, but they were close friends. Bobby told about hanging at Robert's house and listening to Sam Cooke records. Bobby's played with about all the blues men, all theĀ Kings for sure.
