We Three Kings
Eugene Ruffolo & V.A. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

We three kings of orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain
Moor and mountain
Following yonder star
O star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy perfect light
Born a King on Bethlehem's plain
Gold I bring to crown Him again
King for ever, ceasing never
Over us all to reign
Frankincense to offer have I
Incense owns a Deity nigh
Prayer and praising

All men raising
Worship Him, God most high

Overall Meaning

In these lyrics to "We Three Kings," the song portrays the journey of the three wise men, or Magi, from the east to Bethlehem to honor the newborn King, Jesus Christ.

The first verse introduces the three kings, who are described as coming from the Orient (the East). They carry gifts and travel a long distance to reach their destination. The lyrics mention various landscapes they encounter on their journey, such as fields, fountains, moors, and mountains. They follow a guiding star that leads them to their destination.

In the chorus, the star is referred to as a star of wonder and a star of the night. It is described as possessing royal beauty and leads them westward as they continue on their journey. The star symbolizes the divine presence and importance of the newborn King.

The second verse emphasizes the birthplace of Jesus, Bethlehem. Here, the lyrics state that Jesus is born as a King on the plain of Bethlehem. One of the kings brings gold to symbolically crown Jesus, acknowledging his eternal kingship and endless reign over all.

The third verse focuses on another gift brought by one of the kings: frankincense. In religious contexts, frankincense is associated with divinity and used in sacred rituals as an offering to deities. Hence, by bringing frankincense, the king acknowledges that Jesus is a divine figure deserving of praise and worship. The lyrics speak of prayer and praises being raised to honor the newborn King, emphasizing his significance as the Highest God.

Overall, these lyrics paint a vivid picture of the journey made by the three kings to Bethlehem, their reverence for the newborn King, and their acknowledgement of his divine nature. The song, through its poetic imagery, invites listeners to reflect on the story of the Nativity and the significance of Jesus as the central figure in Christianity.

On my cheap desktop speakers...the vocals are not clean...sorta grainy, brittle and rough around the edges. Have heard much cleaner and smoother out of these speakers. Am I the only one?
