Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves
Eurythmics Annie Lennox Dave Stewart & Aretha Franklin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now there was a time when we used to say
That behind every great man
There had to be a great woman
But in these times of change
You know that it's no longer true
So we're comin' out of the kitchen
'Cause there's somethin' we forgot to say to you (we say)
Sisters are doin' it for themselves
Standin' on their own two feet
And ringin' on their own bells
Said, sisters are doin' it for themselves

Now this is a song to celebrate
The conscious liberation of the female state
Mothers, daughters and their daughters too, yeah
Woman to woman
We're singin' with you

The inferior sex had got a new exterior
We got doctors, lawyers, politicians too
Everybody, take a look around
Can you see, can you see, can you see
There's a woman right next to you, hoh hoh

We say, sisters are doin' it for themselves, oh yes we are
Standin' on their own two feet
And ringin' on their own bells
Sisters are doin' it for themselves

Now we ain't makin' stories
We ain't layin' plans
Don't ya know a man still loves a woman
And a woman still loves a man
(Just the same)

Sisters are doin' it for themselves

Ah there was a time, ah when they used to say
That behind every great man
There had to be a great woman
In these times of change
You know that it's no longer true
So we're comin' out of the kitchen
'Cause there's somethin' we forgot to say to you (we say)

Sisters are doin' it for themselves
Standin' on their own two feet
And ringin' on their own bells
Sisters are doin' it for themselves
Go on girl, go for it, go for it
Sisters are doin' it for themselves
Step right to it girl
Sisters are doin' it, doin' it
Doin' it, doin' it, doin' it, doin' it
Sisters are doin' it for themselves
Doin' it, doin' it, doin' it, doin' it
Sisters are doin' it for themselves, ah, ah, ah
Doin' it, doin' it, doin' it, doin' it
Sisters are doin' it for themselves, yeah yeah
Sisters are doin' it for themselves
People pay to hear what we say
Standin' it on our own two feet, yeah

Bring it on down and back
Here we come now

Overall Meaning

The song “Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves” was a collaboration between Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin in 1985, which celebrates the liberation of women as they step out of the kitchen and into the workforce. The song was co-written by Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, with Lennox and Franklin singing lead vocals. The song was written as a response to the idea that behind every great man there had to be a great woman, which was commonly acknowledged in the past. However, the times had changed, and so had the role of women in society.

The opening lyrics of the song address the change in attitudes towards female empowerment. While it was once thought that women belonged only in the kitchen, they were now breaking free from those traditional roles, and taking on new challenges. “Sisters are doin' it for themselves” emphasizes the idea that women can stand on their own two feet and achieve their own success, without relying on men. The song celebrates the “conscious liberation of the female state,” and highlights the achievements made by women in fields such as medicine, law, and politics.

The chorus of the song repeats the message that women are capable of achieving greatness on their own, “standin' on their own two feet, and ringin' on their own bells.” The song also emphasizes the idea that men and women are equal, and that both genders can love and support each other without taking away from each other’s accomplishments. The song’s upbeat tone and message of empowerment have resonated with listeners for decades, making it an enduring anthem for women around the world.

“We ain’t making stories

Don’t you know that a Man still

And a Woman still

Just the same?”

That line always makes me tear up! So touching, and very true.

I'm listening to this song on March 25, 2021, which would've been Aretha's 79th birthday. Rest in peace, Queen of Soul. You are terribly missed.

@antoinettenovella1630

Rip Aretha. She is. Her voice was phenomenal as is Annie Lennox's.

Eric and Sarah‘a mom1000 you going to go see the movie Respect which is about Aretha?????!!!!……Jennifer Hudson is going to play her……I hope you will reply to this

@ericandsarahsmom1000

@@sherryhannah498 Of course. Movies usually open in NYC and here in Los Angeles first, and then go to general release in the rest of the country. Aretha had asked Jennifer to play her. The director said all the songs were filmed live, with real musicians. She didn't want any lip-synching.

@sherryhannah498

@@ericandsarahsmom1000 I didn’t know Aretha had asked Jennifer to play her

@ericandsarahsmom1000

@@sherryhannah498 Yes, she did. There was a clip from the movie, shown here from a French newscast (with English-speaking reporters) on PBS tonight that featured Jennifer saying how awed she was in Aretha's presence, and told by her that she wanted Jennifer to play her in a movie.
