Wood made her film debut in 1998's "Digging To China", but did not garner much attention in the format until her Golden Globe-nominated performance in 2003's "thirteen." She has since starred in such diverse motion pictures as "Pretty Persuasion" (2005), "The Upside of Anger" (2005) and "Down in the Valley" (2006), as well as several others.
Wood has been described by The Guardian newspaper as being "wise beyond her years" and as "one of the best actresses of her generation".
In 2007 she starred as Lucy in the film "Across the Universe," which was the first movie to employ the use of her impressive singing voice. She debuted it on "Once and Again," where she sang "Red Red Robin" (at a wedding) and a few older folk songs (for a play her character starred in). In 2002, she also recorded two songs for the holiday compilation "School's Out! Christmas": "Christmas Isn't Christmas Without You" and a cover of the old chestnut "Silver and Gold."
Her solo contributions to the "Across the Universe" soundtrack are: "Hold Me Tight", "It Won't Be Long", "If I Fell", and "Blackbird".
Blackbird
Evan Rachel Wood Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night
Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
Interpretation:
The lyrics in Evan Rachel Woodโs song โBlackbirdโ is a song of freedom and self-liberation. The metaphorical blackbird represents the soul who has been trapped in its own cage or troubled by lifeโs hardships. The lyrics tell the blackbird to take its broken wings and sunken eyes and learn to fly and see. It has been waiting its whole life for this moment to be free, and now is the time to rise and fly towards the light in the darkest night. The repetition of the chorus (โBlackbird fly, blackbird fly, into the light of the dark black nightโ) provides a strong message of hope and encourages the blackbird to overcome whatever has been holding it back and to take a leap of faith.
This songโs message is quite powerful because it addresses that even after hitting rock bottom, one can still rise above and be free from their own mental and emotional cages. It suggests that it takes time to learn and grow, but ultimately, anything is possible. Itโs also worth noting that the blackbird is a traditional symbol of rebirth and renewal, perhaps adding to the songโs message of finding hope and light in the darkest of situations.

one of the few covers that are actually better than the original.
the vibe of this song makes the lyrics stronger imo

Normally I disagree with people who say covers are better then the original. This is one of the rare exceptions.
@76monkfish
And I agree. Very few renditions become better than the original. This being one of them. โ๏ธ

My favourite Beatles tune. No matter who sings it, it always sounds beautiful. Five stars.
@DeeFig66
I like the quietness of this cover. It feels more serious and it elevates the lyrics... but that's just my opinion.
@Shastasnow
I agree with your opinion ^_^ It all depends on the situation

It's a grand opinion. She rose to the challenge.

I agree. I hate to admit it, but I kind of prefer all the Across the Universe over the originals. The modern touches really show a modern audience just how great these songs were. Like listening to someone covering Beethoven on an electric guitar.
