O mio Babbino Caro
Evancho Jackie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

O mio babbino caro,
Mi piace, afa bello bello,
Vo'andare in Porta Rossa
A comperar l'anello!
Si, si, ci voglio andare!
E se l'amassi indarno,
Andrei sul Ponte Vecchio
Ma per buttarmi in Arno!
Mi struggo e mi tormento,
O Dio! Vorrei morir!
Babbo, pietafa , pietafa
Babbo, pietafa , pietafa

English Translation
Oh my dear father,
I like him, he is very handsome.
I want to go to Porta Rossa
To buy the ring!
Yes, yes, I want to go there!
And if my love were in vain,
I would go to Ponte Vecchio
And throw myself in the Arno!

I am pining and I am tormented,
Oh God! I would want to die!

O Mio Babbino Caro, a soprano aria from the opera Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini. It is sung by Lauretta after tensions between her father and the family of her beloved Rinuccio threaten to separate the lovers.

I like to think that John Ringling's spirit was there, giving her a standing ovation and bawling his eyes out. i know i was.

I saw Ms Evancho in concert last night in Ft. Lauderdale. When she sang this number, it connected me to my dear Mother Jean, who died 53 years ago. She too had an extraordinary voice, but chose to be a wife and mother instead of pursuing that career. By chance, the concert venue was the very place where our family often went when I was a child. She would be very comfortable there, where I won not one but two Easter Egg Hunts in the early 1950's. For me, through Jackie she sang this song to me.

July can't get here fast enough. Once you see Jackie live once, you become an addict.

What a little sweetheart. I don't ever get teary eyed listening to singers but it happens often watching and listening to her sing,, shes definitely special. John Denver was another.

So astoundingly beautiful.

Back then I used to say they should've had her Star in a TV Show called, "Can You Sing Better Than a 5th Grader?". I doubt there would've been many winners.

I think this is the most beautifully sung piece of music I've ever heard in my life. I consider myself a "Music Person" & I remember seeing this show. When Jackie sang this, it made my cry. I don't mean brought tears to my eyes, I mean when she finished, the tears were rolling down my cheeks. What an amazing talent then & she still is!!!

The famous Jackie Effect .

Jackie is so tiny with such a big, beautiful voice. Diamonds are small but shine the brightest light.

How can anyone dislike this? Her voice makes me ponder what the angels must really sing like. Her voice just pulls at my heart.

@myglaren

It is unbelievable that they still hang on and hit the thumbs down button almost as soon as the videos are posted.
At least most of the negative commenters have give up, those who used to say she would destroy her voice or be burned out by the time she was fifteen.
Very happy to see that Jackie has proved them all wrong and is just as delightful today as she ever was.

I have just made a new convert - my daughter's boyfriend, a professional musician who had never heard of her until yesterday. He is staggered by her voice and ability.
