After a solo tour in the fall of 2003, Alexakis decided to continue with Everclear, organizing a new band that made its debut in March of 2004. The new lineup consisted of bass player Sam Hudson, guitarist Dave French, and drummer Eric Bretl. In the summer of 2004, the band added keyboard player Josh Crawley, and swapped Bretl for former Everclear drum tech Brett Snyder. The new lineup released its first recording, a cover of Woody Guthrie's This Land Is Your Land, that summer. A self-released EP of performances recorded for XM Satellite Radio called Closure was given out at shows in the fall of 2004.
Free of a major label, Alexakis spent the ensuing year and half slowly recording material for a new Everclear release. He admitted that the time after the breakup of the original lineup served as a "wake up call", during which he suffered his third divorce and a filing for bankruptcy. Alexakis announced the completion of the album in early 2006,titled Welcome To The Drama Club. The new band is now on Eleven Seven Music.
In August of 2008, drummer Brett Snyder left the band after four years. He was then replaced by Tommy Stewart, who previously played in bands Fuel and Godsmack.
Hateful
Everclear Lyrics

He is dreamin' hard of a girl all claid in bad plaid and mad at the whole world,
All her friends they are blessed impressed intelligent freaks,
All of them are six feet tall all of them are hateful to me,
She sleeps alone and wet with her phone in her face all tied up in her old bed,
She walks alone everyday up and down the rainy streets in her own weird way,
All her friends they are blessed impressed intelligent freaks,
All of them are six feet tall all of them are hateful to me,
Hateful, yeah they're hateful to me,
Hateful, yeah they're hateful to me,
Hateful,
Getting very hateful
The lyrics to Everclear's song "Hateful" are a melancholic reflection on unrequited love and the frustration of not being able to connect with someone who is in a different place emotionally. The song opens with a description of a woman who is geographically far away from the singer, who is longing for her. He dreams of her but finds that she is too wrapped up in her own problems, as evidenced by her sleeping alone with her phone, and walking around in her own "weird way." Despite his feelings for her, she seems distant and uninterested in him.
The second verse introduces the woman's friends, who the singer describes as "blessed impressed intelligent freaks." He notes that they are all tall and hateful towards him. This creates a sense of isolation and rejection for the singer, who feels that he can't get close to the woman he wants to be with because of this barrier between them. The repeated refrain of "Hateful, yeah they're hateful to me" emphasizes this feeling of exclusion and the deep sense of frustration that comes with it.
Overall, the lyrics to "Hateful" convey a sense of longing, loneliness, and heartbreak. The singer's desire for someone who is emotionally unavailable, combined with the hostility of the woman's friends, creates a sense of hopelessness and despair.
