Heroin Girl
Everclear Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used to know a girl
She had two pierced nipples and a black tattoo
We'd drink that Mexican beer
We'd live on Mexican food
Yeah, I wish I could go back
Yes, back in time

Esther used to be the kind of girl that you would
Never leave
She'd do anything to give me what I need for my
Disease
She'd do anything

I can hear them talking in the real world
But they don't understand that I'm happy in hell
With my heroin girl
Yeah, with a heroin girl

Esther used to be the kind of lover you would
Never leave
She'd do anything to give me what I need for my
Disease
She'd do anything

I can hear them talking in the real world
But they don't understand that I'm losing myself
In a white-trash hell
Lost inside a heroin girl
Yeah, with a heroin girl, yeah yeah

They found her out in the fields
About a mile from home
Her face was warm from the sun
But her body was cold
I heard a policeman say
Just another overdose
Just another overdose!

Esther used to be the kind of lover you would
Never leave
She'd do anything to give me what I need for my

Disease
She would do anything

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Heroin Girl" by Everclear portray a story of a drug addiction and the unhealthy relationship that comes with it. The song describes a girl named Esther, who used to be the singer's lover, and how her love fueled his addiction. The song starts with a reminisce of the past, a time where life was easier and the singer and Esther could enjoy their Mexican beer and food together. However, the chorus highlights the clear consequences of their unhealthy bond as the singer describes himself as happy in hell, lost inside a heroin girl. Though Esther used to do anything to give the singer what he needed for his disease, the overdose that led to her death highlights the tragic conclusion of their relationship. Through these lyrics, Everclear conveys a heartfelt message of addiction, codependency, and the tragic outcomes that come with such a lifestyle.

The band put an ad in a local Portland newspaper letting people know that the video shoot was taking place. A number of local high school kids ditched school that day to participate The director gave out a number of 8mm film cameras to the kids, and let them film the band. The band played the song several times. The footage was then edited together to make the finished product The students were later suspended from school, and Everclear received a nice little note from the Portland School Board

@haymaker710

That is so punk rock

@wyzerwizard79

Heck, the suspension would totally be worth it! Whoo hoo! Gotta love my P town, it's awesome! What part of town was this filmed in? I have a hunch that it's Old Town.

I'm 35 years old and stationed at Misawa Air Base in northern Japan in the middle of nowhere and Everclear is about to play on this base in October. This was the first song I ever fell in love with. The first CD I ever bought. And Santa Monica was the first song I ever learned on guitar. I have never seen them live before. It's a dream come true. Thank you Everclear for coming to Misawa. PLEASE play this song.
