Gemini
Evergreen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's only a phase
And I've only got myself to blame
But this time I might
Be going insane
From the people growing in my brain
Can you hear them too?

Calling my name
I can feel them all over my face
Pulling in and out and back in again
I might as well be any other shape
I might as well

I could be anyone
Anyone that you want
That you want me to become
Anyone at all

It's always the same
And there's no getting out of one another, I fear
One and the same, do you not get it?
We are everyone we could be

And when they cut us up into separate blocks
We will finally know
Whichever one of us is a person first
When they turn the lights off
Turn the lights off, turn the lights
Turn the lights off, turn the lights off
Turn the lights off
I know what I said
There's a thousand voices in my head
And I want to know
Are you one of them?
Do you sway depending on the way I bend
It's no wonder why

Cause you're a gemini
Just like me
You're a gemini
Gemini maybe, yeah, you and I
You and I have got a common sign

It's always the same
And there's no getting out of one another, I fear
One and the same, do you not get it?
We are everyone we could be

And when they cut us up into separate blocks
We will finally know
Whichever one of us is a person first
When they turn the lights off
Turn the lights off, turn the lights
Turn the lights off, turn the lights off
Turn the lights off

Cause you're a gemini
Just like me
You're a gemini
Gemini maybe, yeah, you and I
You and I have got a common sign

It's always the same
And there's no getting out of one another, I fear
One and the same, do you not get it?
We are everyone we could be

And when they cut us into separate blocks
We will finally know
Whichever one of us is a person first
When we turn the lights off
Turn the lights off, turn the lights

Turn the lights off, turn the lights off
Turn the lights off

Overall Meaning

The song "Gemini" by Evergreen talks about the feeling of being overwhelmed by the different voices and perspectives inside our heads. The opening lines suggest that the singer is going through a phase or a period of confusion and is holding themselves responsible for it. They feel like they may be going insane with the multitude of people, or personalities, growing inside their brain. The chorus then asks the listener if they can relate, if they too hear these voices, and if they can be influenced or swayed by the way the singer bends.

The song then goes on to suggest that everyone, including ourselves, has the potential to become anyone. By that, it means that every individual has a multitude of identities or personalities within them that can surface at different times. The line "We are everyone we could be" emphasizes the fact that we are not limited to a single identity or personality, but rather are made up of multiple layers that come to the surface based on the circumstances we find ourselves in.

The song ends with the suggestion that we will finally know who we truly are when we turn off the lights and are left with our own thoughts. It suggests that the different personalities or voices inside our heads will be cut into separate blocks and one of them will emerge as the dominant one. The song concludes by emphasizing that the singer and the listener are both Geminis, highlighting the astrological meaning of the song's title.

This song is really helping me through some shitty times right now, thank you evergreen, thank you so much.

@fefairys

this almost certainly wasn’t the intent but i heavily relate to this song as someone with DID (disassociative identity disorder, previously known as multiple personality disorder)
“the people growing in my brain” is exactly how i would describe getting new alters, and the chorus of “when they cut us up into separate blocks then we’ll finally know whichever one of us is a person first when we turn the lights off” hits so hard because this disorder makes you feel like you’re not your own person like everyone else, you’re a mishmash of all these different personalities, and sometimes you desperately want to know which one is the REAL you, which one is the REAL person?
but the answer is “we’re one in the same do you not get it we are everyone we could be” all of us are “the real one”!!

and the whole “i can be anyone that you want” is how plurality manifests a lot of the time, alters switch in and out depending on who we’re talking to to match our conversational partner’s vibes and personality.

this song makes me real emotional cause of my interpretation of it :’)

@EvergreenMusic

Hi! many thanks for this comment. In a way the song was indeed written about this feeling of having multiple selves that sometimes clash, which I think many of us struggle with on a level even without having a diagnosed disorder. It's also about finding out who you are supposed to be and the questionable temptation of modeling yourself after someone else's projection of you.
Much love from Evergreen! - michael

@@EvergreenMusic thanks for the reply! :D yeah i figured it was more along those lines of how most everyone tends to feel as opposed to my specific thing haha. either way, i heavily relate to this song, it really speaks to me and i always feel so moved by it so thanks for making it :') thanks for making music in general, y'all're great!!!

@tomireef9383

came here from spotify thinking this would have millions of views and i see that this song doesn’t get the praise it deserves😞. Such a good song ❤️

@taylarrr

I don't know but this song just speaks to me. I sort of relate to it but not fully, its a strange feeling, a mix of nostalgia but also a sort of new feeling. It feels like im in a nice urban home that is stylized to be my own, about 15 stories up and overlooking a long, city-like street while thinking about how I had just moved schools and left one of my best friends, but I have a very big future ahead of me. Its just a song that speaks to me in a way that no other song can.
