Moor
Every Time I Die Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pay no mind to the stranger in the 4 a.m.
He's not the one we know and he knows
I slept through the war you waged with him for a little bit
Until he cracked your bones and you had to let go
So I make believe I've discovered peace
But I'll skin the man alive and sell the meat
I'll wait in the dirt where he left your blood
If he returns for it I can make it right for good
Oh how I wish he would
Lost you in the overflowing fog that's been here awhile
So I plan to keep watch as long as the wolves are out
They're always around and more violent than hell
I have eyes of every color now and they're vigilant
It doesn't matter who knocks
You don't let them in

There are terrible men
I'm one so I should know
Heaven smiles on me now and then
But the devil always had hooks in
All I want is his head
And this horrible fucking world will be wonderful again
There is so much beauty and love
And when I eat his beating heart I can bring it back to us
All I want is his head
And this horrible fucking world will be wonderful again
There is so much beauty and love
And when I eat his beating heart I can bring it back to us

There's nothing that I couldn't do except cover you when the slings of arrows came
And I've never been the same

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Every Time I Die's song "Moor" are complex and challenging to interpret, but with careful reflection and analysis, we can begin to unpack their meaning. The song starts with a cryptic statement essentially saying to pay no attention to someone who appears strange or out of place at 4 a.m. The song then shifts focus to a violent encounter that occurred between two individuals, one of whom was apparently known to the singer. The singer slept through the altercation but found out about it later when they discovered that bones were broken. This suggests that the singer knew the person who was injured and was likely close to them.

The singer then talks about their desire for revenge, saying that they will "skin the man alive and sell the meat" if given a chance. This aggressive language points to the singer’s desire for vengeance and possibly even their willingness to commit violent acts. However, the singer also suggests that they are waiting for the other person to return in the hopes of making things right. This creates a sense of tension and ambiguity about the singer's intentions and motives.

The song continues to explore the theme of violence and revenge, with the singer suggesting that they are a "terrible man" and that they want the head of the person who caused harm to their friend. However, the singer also acknowledges the beauty and love that exists in the world, suggesting that they want to bring it back by taking violent action. The final line of the song suggests that the singer has been deeply affected by the violent encounter and has never been the same since witnessing it.

In summary, the lyrics to "Moor" are difficult to unravel and interpret fully. They explore themes of violence, revenge, and the complexity of human emotions and motivations. The song creates a sense of tension and ambiguity, as the singer expresses both a desire for revenge and a sense of longing for peace and beauty in the world.

One of the biggest surprises on the album. I think these are some of Keith's most personal lyrics accompanied with one of his best vocal deliveries. Easily one of my faves off of the album.

Honestly the lyrics in this song are hardcore, and some of the best I’ve heard in metal. Shit go hard.

I was a little skeptic about how I felt about this song until Keith gave context in an interview. Now it's one of my favorites. It's an emotion and circumstance many of us can relate to, and I haven't really seen it captured so well in music until now.

"Something very unfortunate happened to someone I love very much while I was away from home. It left me feeling angrier and more helpless than I have ever felt, and yet the person who it happened to completely transcended the experience. I tried to follow suit and learn to forgive but I could not. I still cannot. This song is about the karma and the undeniable human desire to seek revenge.” -KB

I wonder what happened

Sam Henry I think it is about keith's wife's mugging outside their house. Keith was recording Ex lives at the time so that explains the talk of not being there for the person in the song. He talks about sleeping through this person's war ie the mugging of his wife while keith is sleeping across the country. Keith talks about how he acts like it doesn't bother him and he's "discovered peace" but really if keith could he'd skin him alive, just do horrible things to him because he dared attack someone keith loves. Now keith doesn't want this wife to ever go anywhere and he "promises to keep watch as long as the wolves are out". Keith feels like if he destroys that man everything will go back to how it was, with beauty and love. This assault has really torn keith up because he wasn't there to protect his wife. It has really changed his life.

***** Wow, that's intense. Thanks man!

This song, the emotion and the true story behind it, really remind me of premeditated by the plot in you. that song is about landon, the screamer's, little sister getting raped and her refusing to tell him who did it. the whole song is about him practically planning and fantasizing about what he is going to do to the guy when he sees him. very different story, but both very emotionally charged and really really fucking good.

@Adam K thats exactly correct

Man, I can always relate to this song.  Having an abusive (ex)step dad to my mother, this just hits home, and how I feel about the whole situation.
