Unlearning
Evidence Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I woke up put the phone down
Put the mic up
Said the first thing that came to mind
Like I don't write much
That's a lie, we all know it making beats
Doing it so I could
Show my people that I'm growing
I don't cry much
I love my people when I'm in their presence
Nothing like community i don't lie much
And that's a present gift
I'm unwrapping i'm unlearning
Trip jazz cigarettes
I'm never done burning i get the one turning
Start a new chapter and that's a testament
A little lesson for the rest of them
Running off an old model
Trying to get some new results i unfollow
A slow flower a go-getter
Never been a no-shower
Said this verse with my eyes closed
And smell the scent through my nose
I don't practice
I rehearse it at the live show
A young Miles, but what do I know?
I don't know much i go through a lot
And I ain't blowing up the spot
To throw it all away
You gotta know what you got
A lot of secrets that escaped me
Living up to my potential where it takes me
We all scared of the top
We all scared if we flop
We won't be riding these
Breakbeats like H-Street
I need a lease for the next ten
Feel like I'm destined
Need a bird as my best friend
I buy the book so I could follow the plot
It's not a follow-up to Weather Or Not
This it's own shit
Pistol grip pump with the chrome grip
A lot of people tripping
I tell 'em don't slip
I tell 'em don't get shot
I tell 'em Freestyle Fellowship
"Bullies Off The Block"
The streets are watching and they hot
Watch what you say

The jealous watch when you drop
I don't know much

Overall Meaning

In these lyrics, Evidence reflects on his growth and journey as an artist. He acknowledges that he may not write as much as he claims, but he emphasizes the importance of his music in showing his personal growth to his community. He expresses love for his people and values their presence, emphasizing the significance of community in his life.

The line "I'm unwrapping, I'm unlearning" suggests that Evidence is evolving as an artist and shedding old habits or beliefs. He compares this process to burning jazz cigarettes, indicating that it may not always be easy but is necessary for his artistic development. The phrase "start a new chapter" further emphasizes his desire for growth and the need to leave behind old patterns for new experiences. He sees this as a testament to his continued progress.

Evidence also acknowledges his dedication to his craft, stating that he doesn't practice but rather rehearses his performances at live shows. This line showcases his confidence and stage presence, as he can deliver his verses effortlessly with his eyes closed. He references musician Miles Davis as a comparison, implying that he aspires to reach a similar level of artistry.

The lyrics also touch on the fear and uncertainty that comes with success. Evidence acknowledges that many people, including himself, may be scared of reaching the top or failing. He advises caution in one's words because others are watching closely, and he encourages staying true to oneself and not slipping up. He mentions the influential rap group Freestyle Fellowship and their song "Bullies Off The Block," possibly indicating that he draws inspiration from their authenticity and originality.

This man lost a loved one, his wife and the mother of his only son to a battle with cancer. He didn't stop, didn't quit, Evidence persevered like a warrior. I can only imagine the pain he carries with him from that moment in time. Respect to you evidence and thank you for blessing us with your work. You are the definition of "chase the clouds away" 🙏🏻💯👊🏻 god bless you.
