Walking
Evolution Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My fingers burn in the breakdown
This part of everything behind me
I fade into off the headlights
Crushing every feeling that's in me

These walls you've built never come down
One's a crowded number when you're one
Lights flicker still in your eyes
All across the ground I own

You hear things that you can't see
Echoes on and off
Thoughts spinning out of me
What's your impulse for me?

Time never leaves until it's over
Shadow falling never stay
Deep treble lights that they cover
Softly slipping down my face

You hear things that you can't see
Echoes on and off
Thoughts spinning out of me
What's your impulse for me?

I'm walking on fire
I'm walking on fire.

Time's never still in my mind
Stay where I belong in your fumes
I'm pushing back deeper lies
Still wait, open to you

You hear things that you can't see
Echoes on and off
Thoughts spinning out of me
What's your impulse for me?

I'm walking on fire.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Walking On Fire by Evolution are a powerful expression of pain, isolation, and emotional turmoil. The opening lines describe a physical sensation of burning in the fingers, perhaps a metaphor for a high-stress situation that makes the singer anxious and nervous. The reference to leaving everything behind in this breakdown implies that something has either gone wrong or collapsed in the singer's life, and they are struggling to move on from it.

The next lines speak of crushing feelings and walls that never come down. The mention of crowded number and flickering lights suggest a feeling of being lost and disoriented in the chaos of life. The line "you hear things that you can't see" might be a nod to the singer's anxiety, which is causing them to imagine things that aren't there. The chorus "I'm walking on fire" is a powerful metaphor that suggests the singer is in a dangerous situation, perhaps one that is overwhelming them emotionally and causing them to feel like they are walking on hot coals.

The second verse speaks of the passage of time and how it won't stop until everything is over. The line "shadow falling never stay" could be a reference to how fleeting and temporary things can be when you're going through a difficult time. The singer appears to be in a state of emotional flux where they feel like they're slipping further away from who they are. The last part of the verse seeks to embrace a person whom they can turn to with the line "still wait, open to you," but it's unclear if that person exists or not.

Hello PBS Eons! I've been loving your videos for months now, to the point that after years of casual use I've actually logged in to youtube to subscribe and comment. First comment on youtube for me. Thankyou so much for your work, it's really therapeutic in the crises of the present world to immerse yourself in the Earth's deep history. It's also knowledge that's deeply necessary to put our present in context, particularly when you are talking about things like mass extinctions.

I had a couple of ideas for videos, was wondering if either of them would strike you as interesting:

1. I think I read before that not all trees share a common tree ancestor, and many are related to other kinds of plants more closely. Is it the case that many different kinds of trees are actually the product of convergent evolution? Is being tall and woody just a good way for plants to live, and has evolved on multiple occasions - or is the breakthrough of being a tree something that stems from a common source? (As I say I am a non-expert and not sure about this, so others can set me straight if I'm wrong!)

2. I also read once that many of the non-avian Dinosaurs back in the day are thought to have lacked the ability to roar and make tremendous noises like we imagine them doing. This got me wondering about how modern birds got to be able to communicate so intricately and beautifully with sound - what do we know about how and when bird song evolved?

Hope you see these and find them interesting. Thanks very much and keep up the good work - will consider Patreon next!

The defining feature that makes us human -- what sets us apart from other animals -- is we're the only species that isn't afraid of vacuum cleaners.

Forest Daughter's Journals

I have anxiety and actually can't stand to vacuum as it masks the sounds of approaching predators. Truly, hyper-vigilance. I took up the carpets and sweep a lot.

Alexander Supertramp Human predators?

Gareth Baus

Vacuum cleaners actually bother me, I just ignore my gut reaction when using them.

Gareth Baus

Alexander Supertramp the eyes are a remnant from our tree dwelling ancestors that were less likely to have a predator sneak up on them and more likely to die from a fall If a distance is misjudged.

Gareth Baus

Scott Whatever other species act in ways that appear to indicate some level of empathy so not even that is uniquely human.

While I love the videos on dinosaurs and ancient fauna the most, I'd really love to see a video about when more than one species of human coexisted, because that stuff is wild for me to think about.

The fact that I am part Neanderthal blows my mind.

@Tazy50 they're Homo sapiens. It's kinda racist to think that they're not like us just because they have differing physical features apart from yours.

I agree 👍
