Naked
FINNEAS Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

This microphone is like the first time I've ever heard the truth in my life
I hate it because I was a coward

La-da-da, la-da-da-da-da
La-da-da da, da-da-da-da-da
La-da-da, la-da-da
La-da-da-da-da, la-da-da-da-da-da
You can't make me cry anymore, don't try
If you see me walk by, maybe you should be shy

If I don't feel it, I don't fake it
If I'm being real, it was overrated
If I know the deal, then I won't take it
I can't believe you've seen me naked

La-da-da, la-da-da-da-da
La-da-da da, da-da-da-da-da
La-da-da, la-da-da
La-da-da-da-da, la-da-da-da-da-da

Ended back in early eighteen, we didn't want the same thing
I didn't like the taste of cigarettes or your complaining
Then you called all my friends and told 'em all lies
Man, I wish I was surprised

If I don't feel it, I don't fake it
If I'm being real, it was overrated
If I know the deal, then I won't take it
I can't believe you've seen me naked

La-da-da, la-da-da-da-da
La-da-da da, da-da-da-da-da
La-da-da, la-da-da
La-da-da-da-da, la-da-da-da-da-da

All that time spent with my therapist
Talking over all your arrogance
Told her how you loved to drink and drive
All that footage, I got rid of it
But I bet somewhere you've hidden it
Just like you to bury me alive

If you're gonna send it, they might save it
And if you're gonna bend it, you might break it
And if you're gonna spend it, then don't waste it
I can't believe you've seen me

If I don't feel it, I don't fake it
And if I'm being real, it was overrated

If I know the deal, then I won't take it
I can't believe you've seen me

Overall Meaning

In "Naked" by FINNEAS, the lyrics reflect a sense of vulnerability and the consequences of trusting someone who ultimately betrays that trust. The song begins with the singer expressing a newfound honesty and authenticity in their life, symbolized by the microphone, which has allowed them to hear the truth for the first time. However, this truth also brings pain because the singer realizes they were a coward in the past. This could suggest that they were not true to themselves or failed to stand up for what they believed in.

The chorus "You can't make me cry anymore, don't try, if you see me walk by, maybe you should be shy" implies a sense of empowerment and growth. The singer no longer allows the person who hurt them to have power over their emotions. They suggest that if the person sees them, they should feel ashamed for their actions.

The second verse reveals that the relationship with this person ended in early 2018 because they wanted different things. The singer didn't enjoy the taste of cigarettes or the constant complaining from their partner. The line "Man, I wish I was surprised" hints at the singer's awareness of the person's manipulative and deceitful behavior. They express their refusal to fake feelings and acknowledge that being genuine was overrated, suggesting that authenticity is not always rewarded.

The bridge of the song emphasizes the singer's journey of healing and moving forward. They mention spending time with a therapist to address the traumas caused by their partner's arrogance. The lyrics also reveal that the partner loved to drink and drive, highlighting their reckless and dangerous behavior. The singer asserts their power by declaring that they have gotten rid of any evidence or reminders of the relationship, even though they suspect the partner may have hidden some.

Overall, "Naked" explores themes of vulnerability, betrayal, empowerment, and growth. It showcases the singer's determination to be true to themselves and move forward from a toxic relationship.

This has been on repeat since I’ve heard it, I love it! The lyrics are so well written. In so few words, he accurately depicts the situation in a way that truly hits your heart. It’s so relatable, and raw. The way he cuts off “naked” towards the end, really hit me, the way we feel extremely uncomfortable to admit to things out loud when its so deeply shameful to our own psyche. It shows how deeply he regrets this person. I just love how he plays it off, like, “Oh, well. It was my fault, nothing I can do to change it now. Here’s a warning for everyone else. Don’t send nudes.” Everything about it is a masterpiece. It allows fans to emotionally heal with a song that doesn’t hold that emotional baggage, it feels normalized to feel any way you feel. Plus, it gives off a vibe that he’s flipping the script, insinuating that the other person is in the place to feel ashamed, not a victim.
