Tonight
FM Static Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I remember the times we spent together
On those drives
We had a million questions
All about our lives
And when we got to New York
Everything felt right
I wish you were here with me
Tonight

I remember the days we spent together
Were not enough
And it used to feel like dreamin'
Except we always woke up
Never thought not having you
Here now would hurt so much

Tonight I've fallen and I can't get up
I need your loving hands to come and pick me up
And every night I miss you
I can just look up
And know the stars are
Holdin' you, holdin' you, holdin' you tonight

I remember the time you told me about when you were eight
And all those things you said that night that just couldn't wait
I remember the car you were last seen in
And the games we would play
All the times we spilled our coffees
And stayed out way too late
I remember when you said and told me about your Jesus
And how not to look back even if no one believes us
When it hurt so bad sometimes
Not having you here

I sing
"Tonight I've fallen and I can't get up
I need your loving hands to come and pick me up
And every night I miss you
I can just look up
And know the stars are
Holdin' you, holdin' you, holdin' you tonight"

I sing
"Tonight I've fallen and I can't get up
I need your loving hands to come and pick me up
And every night I miss you
I can just look up

And know the stars are
Holdin' you, holdin' you, holdin' you tonight"

Overall Meaning

The song β€œTonight” by FM Static is a tribute to the memories of a past relationship. The singer reminisces on the time he spent with his former partner, driving around town asking each other questions about their lives. Even though it felt like a dream, they always woke up in reality, wishing they could spend more time together. The song takes a melancholic turn when the singer reveals that he does not have his partner with him anymore and is struggling to cope. He is feeling helpless and needs his partner to come and rescue him from his pain.

The chorus seems to serve as an outlet to express the emotions he is feeling. He misses his partner dearly, but he takes solace in the fact that the stars are holding her tonight. The song not only talks about the person's significant other but also about the memories of their time together, the things they talked about, the car they rode in, the games they played and the coffee they spilled together. The song is a reminder that even though that relationship ended, the memories are still treasured by the singer.

In conclusion, the song β€œTonight” expresses feelings of nostalgia and the emotional struggle of missing someone. The lyrics show that even though a relationship has ended, the memories of it continue to linger with the person, making it hard to let go.

It was really a sad story. The composer was engaged with his long time girlfriend. As they depart for work, his girlfriend died and was one of the victims of the 9/11 incident at Twin Towers. He was so deeply heart broken and devastated. Thus, he composed that song in honor of his girlfriend.

β€œand every night I miss you I can just look up. and know the stars are holding you TONIGHT.”
