Hey look around man everybody's got one
So hurry up get your dollar bills together
They're going to try and get you something even better
You're not so sure but you heard it's great
You get there first so you won't be late
Everybody else will have to wait in line
I overestimated you
You knew that I probably would
We're so predictable
We've been sold a bill of goods
You want a choice want to make your own decisions
You want to make up the rules and the provisions
And everything is going to be so great
When you're the latest keeper at the gate
Everybody else will have to wait in line
The lyrics of Face to Face's song, "Bill of Goods," is about the commercialization of society and how people are manipulated into believing that they need the latest trends and products that are being sold to them. The song suggests that everyone is being sold the same "bill of goods," and they are often hypnotized by advertisements and marketing strategies.
The first verse highlights the sales tactics that are used to make people believe they need something better even if they are content with what they have. The line "Everybody's got one" shows how products are popularized and used to create a demand. The second verse touches on the competitive nature of society, and how people strive to be the latest trendsetters for fear of being left behind. The chorus resonates with the disappointment of realizing that people have been fooled into buying things they don't need.
The lyrics reflect the band's punk rock style, which served as an escape from commercialization and conformity. It is their way of offering a message of hope and encouragement to live life on one's own terms. Overall, "Bill of Goods" is about standing up against the status quo and challenging societal norms.
