After releasing six studio albums, including best-selling records The Real Thing (1989) and Angel Dust (1992), Faith No More officially announced its breakup on April 20, 1998. The band has since reunited, conducting The Second Coming Tour between 2009 and 2010, and releasing its seventh studio album, Sol Invictus, in May 2015. After the touring cycle of Sol Invictus, Faith No More went on hiatus once again. In November 2019, the band announced that it would reunite to embark on a 2020 UK and European tour, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was postponed. Touring was due to recommence with a brief US tour in September 2021, followed by the previously postponed UK and Europe dates in June 2022, but all tour dates were cancelled with Patton citing mental health reasons.

Ugly in the Morning
Faith No More Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You woke up
It looked better before
More, more
And the stomach turns
Say nothing without wasting a word
I know exactly what you meant
I know how piggy feels
He starves without missing a meal
Look in the mirror
Don't look at me
I'm ugly in the morning
When the headache is gone,
The sun is not.
Forgot to turn the alarm
On, on
Doesn't matter how much you think
Or the number of hairs in the sink
I did it to myself again
I know how piggy feels
He starves without missing a meal
It's getting clearer
The song “Ugly in the Morning” by Faith No More is a deep dive into the self-loathing and degradation that one can feel after a night of heavy drinking and a morning of regret. The lyrics convey the feeling of waking up the morning after with feelings of guilt and disgust. The line “You did one thing wrong, you woke up. It looked better before” conveys the sense of waking up in a sober state and feeling worse than when one was drunk.
The song takes a turn as the singer shifts their attention to the listener and comments on how they understand how “piggy feels” and references the line “he starves without missing a meal” indicating the self-destructive behavior that often accompanies these feelings of self-loathing. The line “don't look at me, I'm ugly in the morning” speaks to the shame and embarrassment that often accompanies the morning after a heavy night of drinking.
The song’s overall message is one of self-destruction and feelings of disgust with oneself. The lyrics are relatable for anybody who has ever woken up the next morning after a night of heavy drinking and felt regretful about their actions.
