I know my love by his way of walking,
And I know my love by his way of talking
And I know my love by his suit of blue
And if my love leaves me, what will I do?
Cho: And still she cried:"I love him the best
But a troubled mind, sure, can get no rest."
And still she cried, "Bonny boys are few,
There is a dance house in Maradyke
Where my true love goes every night
And takes a strange one upon his knee
And don't you know, now, that vexes me.
I know my love is an arrant rover
And he'll go roaming the wide world over
In foreign parts he may chance to stray
Where all the girls are so bright and gay,
If my love knew I could wash and wring
If my love knew I could weave and spin
I'd make a dress all of the finest kind
But the want of money leaves me behind.

She fears losing him and bemoans the fact that her troubled mind cannot find rest. The chorus repeats her anxious refrain, "And still she cried:'I love him the best, but a troubled mind, sure, can get no rest.'" She laments the fact that her love frequents a dance house in Maradyke where he dances with other women, causing her vexation. Even though she knows he is a roving man who may venture far and wide, she remains devoted and would do anything to win him back. She yearns to be able to make him a dress, but the want of money leaves her behind.
The lyrics of "I Know My Love" capture the timeless theme of unrequited love and devotion. The woman's deep love for her partner is undeniable, and she seeks to demonstrate her dedication by being competent at household chores, but the absence of funds limits her ability to keep up with his suitors. The repeated refrain emphasizes her inner turmoil and emotional distress, underscoring how all-consuming love can be.
