Family Of The Year is considered to have a "feel good summer" sound. Statements around the web have been made such as "Immediately I was overtaken by the Beatles sounding, toe-tapping, move in my seat beat..." and "Although the band only has six members, it still seemed like there were a lot more bodies contributing to the musical goodness that is Family of the Year. Perhaps it’s just their soft harmonies, comforting guitar chords and melodies that just pull us into their world that make us think that. Whatever it is, we just know we’re fans."
Hey Ma

Hey Ma, hey Ma, hey Ma
I said 'Hey Ma', don't go stretching your wallet
These niggas gotta pay me for taking a year from college
Go on get ya nails polished, stylist for your eyelids
And a pilot for your mileage for them frequent flights to your island
Ms. Brown and Ms. Polleck
Little voice done blown up, middle-class that bonus
Hey Ma, Hey Mama Jan; God just gave me another chance
Rod just gave me another line, probably gave me another fan
7-7-3, Oh, since Kanye was a three-old
Down the street from D. Rose, was practicing his free-throws
Shout out to that Gulf Shrimp, shout out to King Gyro
Shout out that Ms. Moody, auntie Toni them my heroes
We gon' get this paper, put that on my mama
You gon' see us later, put that on my mama
Monica and Ava, thanks for all the favors
Got my money saved up, put that on my mama
We gon' get this paper, put that on my mama
You gon' see us later, put that on my mama

Got my money saved up, put that on my mama

Never got good grades a lot
And turned your hairs to grays a lot
And go in stores and take a lot
And never shopped but saved a lot
So you ain't gotta shop at Save A Lot
And you ain't gotta worry about Chase a lot
They playing with your checks, your shit
Cause they gonna take your pay or not

And I ain't even flexin
But twin bro be that Victor
And Big Cuz be that Chef Sean

In what you do, don't stop
I said don't stop, in what you be
In what you do, don't stop

The song "Hey Ma" by Family of the Year starts with a repetitive chorus of "Hey Ma", which is then followed by the rapping of a son who is seen talking to his mother about how he is making a living in the world of hip-hop music. The son talks about his specific year-long break he had taken from college and how he is now being paid for his work as an artist. He expresses gratitude towards his mother, telling her that she doesn't have to worry about shopping at inexpensive stores like "Save A Lot" anymore, as he has saved enough money to provide for their needs. He also mentions the difficulties he has put his mother through by not behaving well so far, but assures her that he will now be earning his livelihood through a respectable profession.
The song is essentially about a son's gratitude towards his mother for supporting him throughout his life, especially through his difficult journey to become a rapper. Hey Ma, what's new at home? Have you talked to Dad? Does he know about the band?
Hey Tim, what's up with the scene? Is it still the same? Will I still fit in? It's been so long since I've been home I don't care if I ever get there I just want to see you all again The beach, is it still fun? Do you drink and smoke and ride the waves And the ride back home, is it still a dusty, dusty road? In my mind some things change It's been so long since I've been home And I don't care if I ever get there I just want to see you all again Hey Ma, I'm up in space It seems I can't come down There's no where to land There's no where to land
“
I just want to see you all again
— Family of the Year
It's been so long since I've been home I don't care if I ever get there I just want to see you all again Tell me some things never change Not a side of you that if I ever get through I just want to see you all again

This band has a magical quality I can't quite define. Something about their sound brings me back to the best of the 70s. They are new and fresh, and yet harken back to a time when popular music was still enchanting, heartfelt and decent. "Hero" defines them, in my opinion. Listen to that song and you can get a grasp of their essence. May the magic never leave them.

This is the most underrated band... they sound so pure and just majical...

The first time when I heard this song was already in 2014, a tough year between me and my parents. This song gave me a lot of courage and an exit of all my sensibilities, but unfortunately somehow I forgot the name of it, I kept looking for it for such a long time, three years after I found it by accident, I have already moved from Beijng to Paris, still in difficulty with the family, but much better than before, I kind of miss them.
