A Dream Within a Dream
Farmer Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm speaking, not thinking, not sure if I'm making sense
I'm dreaming, not sleeping, awake it doesn't make sense

But I'm waiting for a sign
Anything to stall for time

Could you ever be more than a dream to me
Are you something to idolise?
But I'm waiting for the time
Could I ever make things fine

I'm speaking, not thinking, not sure if I'm making sense
I'm dreaming, not sleeping, awake it doesn't make sense

But I'm waiting for the time
Could I ever make you mine

But I'm never sure what I can take for it
It's a curious state of mind
Will my dream ever come true
Does it all depend on you?

I'm speaking, not thinking, not sure if I'm making sense
I'm dreaming, not sleeping, awake it doesn't make sense

Dream, as precious as life, those warm summer nights
Dream, obsession to me, a target for love

But I'm never sure what I can take for it
It's a curious state of mind
But I'm waiting for a sign
Anything to stall for time
Could you ever be more than a dream to me
Are you something to idolise?
Will my dream ever come true
Does it all depend on you?

I'm speaking, not thinking, not sure if I'm making sense
I'm dreaming, not sleeping, awake it doesn't make sense

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Farmer Boys' song More Than a Dream seem to portray the singer's complicated feelings about a person that they are unsure about. The opening verse suggests that the singer is speaking without thinking, and they are not sure if they are making sense. They are in a dream-like state, not sleeping, but also not fully awake. The uncertainty in the first verse gives way to a hope for a sign, something that would allow the singer to stall for time.

The chorus highlights the singer's conflicted feelings about the person they are thinking about. They wonder if this person could be more than just a dream, something to idolize. However, they are still waiting for the right time and wondering if they could ever make things right between them.

The second verse repeats the same themes but adds another layer of uncertainty. The singer is not sure what they can take from the situation; it's a curious state of mind. They wonder if their dream will ever come true, and if it does, does it all depend on the other person?

Overall, the song suggests that the singer is caught up in a dream-like state, thinking about a person they are unsure about. They are waiting for clarity and trying to figure out if they can make things right. It's a song about the confusion that comes with unrequited love and the hope that something good might come out of it.

It's a pity they let EMI ruin them, the production on the debut LP was terrible and well below the standard of their early singles.
