When the Laughter Stops
Farse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Riding on and on the coat tails of,
We need to figure the way to the key,
Two have it lost in love,
Beneath the backdrop of some fifties show,
We tried to set the wheels in motion,
But the breaks got stuck.

But its been something since I worried,
The kind of people you were with,
I guess I felt left out, insecure,
Now when did this small talk get so big?
And while I know we've both changed,
Extravagant displays too late this house of cards has tipped,
And as the plot thickens becomes the twist.

House of cards its in the ether,
I wouldn't want to be there when the laughter stops,
Guest book misleading of the names etched, there seldom here to claim.

Well we turned hands, pushed but whe could not break,
Guess what's behing closed doors? Enigma remains.

I thought id turned the corner its like I jumped right back.

Climbing the steeple, out of reach I hear a slow dance,
Before we used to bitch and now a fast dance,
A painting that goes through the edges of the framing and something you should of said,

A balancing act upon a ledge as we pull back,
Tightropes across buildings, quiet roads, symptoms, fallings, cast off, calling adieu.

Overall Meaning

The song "When the Laughter Stops" by Farse is a reflection on a past relationship that has gone sour. The first verse sets the scene of two people trying to make their relationship work, only to find that something is holding them back. The metaphorical use of a broken car sets the tone for the rest of the song as the singer feels like they can't move forward. The line "two have it lost in love" suggests that despite their attempts, their love has dwindled and they are left feeling lost.

In the second verse, the singer reflects on their insecurities and feelings of being left out, which have contributed to the deterioration of the relationship. While they acknowledge that both parties have changed, it is too little too late and the "house of cards" that their relationship was built on has come crashing down.

The chorus of "When the Laughter Stops" paints a bleak picture of the aftermath of a relationship. The guest book that was once full of names now has few who claim to be a part of it, echoing the idea that the relationship they thought they had was not as solid as they once believed. The line "I wouldn't want to be there when the laughter stops" is a powerful reminder that even the happiest of relationships can come to an abrupt end.

Overall, "When the Laughter Stops" is a poignant reflection on a failed relationship and the emotions that come with it. Through its use of metaphors and vivid imagery, it paints a bleak but honest picture of the aftermath of a break-up.
