Formed in the late '80s in Peterborough by one Mark D., the band's first release was a flexi disc called You Opened Up My Eyes and featured Sarah C. on vocals. Sarah quickly left the band, supposedly to pursue a career designing crop circles in Peru.
Mark then recruited new members consisting of Katie Keen on vocals, cat lover Paul Huckerby on bass, scottish siren Sheggi Clarkson-Gaffin on guitar and floppy-haired, pig van driver Matthew Johnson on drums.
Soon after the release of their John Peel played single Where's Clare Grogan Now, Katie left the band and Sheggi became the new singer.
Subsequent releases, including the EP Four Songs for Simon, Ferensway EP and The Tulip Explodes, led to a multi-pound recording contract with the fab, London based Vinyl Japan label, home and future home of BMX Bandits, the McCluskey Bros, and Thee Headcoats.
The first of their Vinyl Japan output was an EP entitled Nostalgia and was recorded by Ken McPherson at his studio in Burton-on-Trent. A tour of Germany supporting Throw That Beat in the Garbagecan soon followed.
The band's debut album, Starfish, also recorded by Ken McPherson, came out in 1994 and was followed by two more singles, New Spring Rites for Sarah and Driving Me Wild before the band called it a day.

Big Toe
Fat Tulips Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A big toe mark from a DM shoe
When I kicked you out, literally
No-one makes a fool of me
But tonight, I'm right
It'll be alright
Big head falls again
Think of things we used to do
And all our friends we tortured them
Singing songs by Boney M
And I'm lost today
But it'll be okay
Big head falls again
You used to make me laugh all day
But I just can't think when
Feel like some nostalgia freak
Saying things were better then
You can say "it's not fair!"
Too bad honey, I don't care
I know I've better things to do
Than have my ego burst by you
So goodnight, tonight
I know I'll be alright
Big head falls again
Tonight, tonight
It'll be alright
Big head falls again
Big head falls again
Big head falls again
The Fat Tulips' song, "Big Toe," showcases a post-breakup mindset. The song's tone is assertive, perhaps even bitter in some ways, as the singer reflects on their feelings towards their ex-lover. The opening lines speak of a big toe mark from a Dr. Martens shoe which serves as a physical reminder of this person's presence. The following lines state that the singer has kicked the ex out of their lives, which brings them some satisfaction.
As the song progresses, a conflict arises as the singer begins to reminisce on the good times they shared with their former lover. They recall days filled with laughter and singing silly songs with their friends. But these memories are ultimately overshadowed by the hurt inflicted by the breakup, leading the singer to feel like a 'nostalgia freak' who can only look back on the past with regret. Despite this inner conflict, the singer ends the song on a positive note, reiterating that their head will be alright and the ex's 'big head' has fallen once again.
A careful listen to the lyrics of "Big Toe" indicates some level of empowerment or self-assuredness on the part of the singer. They seem to have moved on from their previous relationship and are confident in their ability to handle the situation. The song also showcases a somewhat lighthearted approach to the topic of heartbreak, with the playful mention of singing Boney M songs with friends.

All that I recall of you
A big toe mark from a DM shoe
When I kicked you out, literally
No-one makes a fool of me
But tonight, I'm right
It'll be alright
Big head falls again
I only remember one thing about you, which is the mark you left on my toe with your Doc Martens. I kicked you out because I refused to be anyone's fool. But today, I'm confident and it's going to be okay. Your arrogance has caused your downfall once again.
Sometimes I think well of you
Think of things we used to do
And all our friends we tortured them
Singing songs by Boney M
And I'm lost today
But it'll be okay
Big head falls again
Occasionally, I reminisce about the activities we partook in and the people we used to know. Together, we entertained ourselves by singing Boney M songs and making a nuisance out of ourselves in front of mutual friends. Today, I'm feeling slightly disoriented, but things are going to work out. Your self-importance is the root of your problems, yet again.
You used to make me laugh all day
But I just can't think when
Feel like some nostalgia freak
Saying things were better then
You used to have a great sense of humor, and I'd spend all day laughing because of you. However, now I can't concentrate, due to an intense sense of nostalgia. Sometimes, I wish things could be the way they were, but that's not going to happen.
You can say "it's not fair!"
Too bad honey, I don't care
I know I've better things to do
Than have my ego burst by you
So goodnight, tonight
I know I'll be alright
Big head falls again
If you think that life isn't fair, too bad because I couldn't care less. I've got better things to do than let you deflate my ego once again. Goodnight, I'm confident that I'll be okay, and your arrogance has triggered your downfall again.
Tonight, tonight
It'll be alright
Big head falls again
Big head falls again
Big head falls again
Tonight, everything is going to be fine. Your arrogance always leads to your defeat, and today isn't any different. Your ego will once again be the cause of your downfall.
