Formed in New York City in 1970, the Fatback Band was the concept of Bill Curtis, an experienced session drummer, inspired to merge the "fatback" jazz beat of New Orleans into a funk band. In addition to Curtis, the band's initial line-up included guitarist Johnny King, bassist Johnny Flippin, trumpet player George Williams, saxophonist Earl Shelton, flautist George Adams, and keyboardist Gerry Thomas. The band specialized in playing "street funk". The group also later included conga player Wayne Woolford, vocalists Jayne and Gerry, Deborah Cooper saxophonist Fred Demerey, guitarist Louis Wright and George Victory.

But on earth it′s just a rat race
Is this the future
We got people workin' 9 to 5
While over 10 percent are trying to stay alive
Is this the future?
But the Dow Jones is on the rebound
Is this the future?
Ronald Reagan says stay the course
But only a fool would wanna endorse
This kind of future
Everyday as I go my way
I can hear the people as they say
"Hey brother can you spare a dime
I don′ wanna end up doin' time."
But they say it's just a sign of the future
Found a car I thought I′d buy
But the interest rates were just too high
Is this the future?
Worked years perfecting my craft
Now my boss is giving me the shaft
Is this the future?
Used to eat steaks and caviar
Now it′s peanut butter in a candy bar
Is this the future?
All my money is nearly spent
Don't have enough to pay the rent
You can cancel the future
Everyday as I go my way
I can hear the people as they say
"Hey brother can you spare a dime
I don′ wanna end up doin' time."
But they say it′s just a sign of the future
Can it be? Are you tellin' me
This is the future?
Can it be? Are you tellin′ me
This is the future, future?
Can it be? Are you tellin' me
This is the future?
Can it be? Are you tellin' me
This is the future, future?
Is this a sign of the future?
Is this a sign of the future?
They say that′s what it is, what it is
Is this a sign of the future?
Is this a sign of the future?
They say that′s what it is, what it is
Is this a sign of the future?

They say that's what it is, what it is

The Fatback Band's "Is This The Future" explores the contradictions of modern society. Despite technological advancements that allow humans to travel to space, life on earth remains a rat race beset by crime, poor education, and economic inequality. The lyrics confront the listener with the challenges and anxieties of life in a world where only a fraction of the population is thriving while the rest struggle to survive. The song's critique of Reagan's conservative policies reveals the band's political allegiance and its advocacy for change. The line "you can cancel the future" represents the band's frustration with the status quo, which seems to offer no hope for a better future.
The song was released in 1980, at a time of widespread social and economic upheaval. The United States was grappling with stagflation—high inflation and high unemployment rates. People felt disillusioned with their government, and many were pessimistic about the future. "Is This The Future" speaks to those anxieties, providing a critical reflection on society and a call for change. The song highlights the harsh reality of life for many underprivileged communities, who are unable to enjoy the benefits of economic growth and technological progress.

Wow, this song actually predicted the future exactly.
@greeneggz_n_ham
It wasn't predicting, it was remembering. Most of what we see happening now has happened before.
We've had sky-high prices before, we've had energy crises before, we've had climate crises before, rampant racism, inequality, police brutality, state sanctioned violence against citizens, state sanctioned violence against non-citizens, state sanctioned corruption. All of that... we've had here before.
This is nothing new in America.
@0dayswithoutincident934
@@greeneggz_n_ham So essentially, history repeated itself.
