Formed in New York City in 1970, the Fatback Band was the concept of Bill Curtis, an experienced session drummer, inspired to merge the "fatback" jazz beat of New Orleans into a funk band. In addition to Curtis, the band's initial line-up included guitarist Johnny King, bassist Johnny Flippin, trumpet player George Williams, saxophonist Earl Shelton, flautist George Adams, and keyboardist Gerry Thomas. The band specialized in playing "street funk". The group also later included conga player Wayne Woolford, vocalists Jayne and Gerry, Deborah Cooper saxophonist Fred Demerey, guitarist Louis Wright and George Victory.

For a love that I thought I couldn't find
I searched day in and day out
For a love that was mine all mine
I played around with love before
I was silly and you know that I played the fool
But then you came and took my life and you changed it
I found lovin'
Since I found you
I'm in love with you
I found lovin'
Since I found you
I'm in love with you
I found lovin'
My sun rises on your face
When I see that certain glow
But picture that's so bright
You're my delight
And that's why I love you so
I've played around with love before
I was silly and you know that I played the fool
But then you came and took my life and you changed it
'Cause I know what I want and where it's at, with you
I found lovin' (somebody to treat me right?)
Since I found you
I'm in love with you babe
I found lovin'
Since I found you
I'm in love with with you
I found lovin'
Yeah, ooh, yeah, I found love, baby, uh, huh, somebody to
Treat me right? oh, yeah
I found someone that's promise to be true to you, baby
Oh, yeah, I found somebody, I found it all in you
Oh, yeah, lovin', lovin', lovin', lovin', I found some
Love, baby, I love you, I love you, oh
Yeah, I found some lovin', lovin', lovin', yeah, oh, yeah
Mmm, I found some lovin', lovin'
Mmm yeah, oh, yeah, I found some lovin', lovin', lovin'
Oh, yeah, I found some lovin' I found
It all in you
The Fatback Band's song "I Found Lovin'" is a soulful track about finding love after searching for a long time. The song touches on themes of love, redemption, transformation, and the joy of finally finding someone who treats you right. The opening verses speak of the singer's search for love, which was fueled by a desire for a love that was truly theirs. The repetition of "I found lovin'" in the chorus is a celebration of the joy and relief that comes with finding love.
The lyrics offer a clear sense of the singer's emotional journey, as well as their realization that they had to change their ways in order to find lasting love. The line "I played around with love before / I was silly and you know that I played the fool" suggests that they had experienced disappointments and heartbreak in the past as a result of their behavior. However, the arrival of the person they address in the song - "you came and took my life and you changed it" - led to a transformation and a newfound sense of certainty and contentment.
The song is a testament to the power of love to change people, and the importance of treating others with respect and kindness. The repetition of the phrase "somebody to treat me right" reinforces this idea, as does the dreamy verse about the "sun rising on your face". All in all, the song is a classic soulful celebration of love and redemption.
