Downtown Toy
Fate Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There he comes, the rich man's son
In daddy's car with the radio on
He's got his eyes in the rearview mirror
He's got his eyes on you

I've noticed you are not yourself
It's like I'm talking to somebody else
Oh how I've been missing you
I don't know what to say or do

Don't walk away
Don't believe a word he says
He's an uptown boy
Baby, you're his downtown toy

Baby if I could only
Make you see that guy's a phony
My love is all that I can give
You thought it was all satin sheets

You winded up in his backseat
He left you standing
In the rain on the corner
But don't say I never warned you

Don't walk away
Don't believe a word he says

He's an uptown boy
Baby, you're his downtown toy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Fate's song "Downtown Toy" tells the story of a girl who is taken in by a rich man's son but is warned by her lover of his true intentions. The boy drives around in his father's car with the radio on and sets his sights on the girl. Her lover takes notice of a change in her behavior and tries to warn her that she is being manipulated. Despite his efforts, the girl falls for the boy's false charm and ends up in his backseat. He leaves her stranded on a street corner in the rain.

The lyrics speak to the theme of financial class divide and how people with money can often lure in those who don't have as much with false promises and material possessions. The use of "uptown boy" and "downtown toy" in the lyrics illustrates this point, as the boy is portrayed as someone from a higher social class who sees the girl as nothing more than something to play with.
