A pioneer of the progressive metal movement, Fates Warning has been referred to as one of the "Big Three" of the genre, creating and popularizing the style along with Queensrÿche and Dream Theater. Their early work, influenced by the new wave of British heavy metal, is also important in the development of American power metal. Fates Warning has released thirteen studio albums, two live albums, one compilation album, one VHS cassette, three DVDs (each featuring live concerts) and four demo tapes. The band experienced its first commercial success with the 1986 release of their third studio album, Awaken the Guardian, which peaked at No. 191 on the Billboard 200 and became the first album released on Metal Blade to enter that chart. Their next three albums—No Exit (1988), Perfect Symmetry (1989) and Parallels (1991)—were also successful; the first two peaked at No. 111 and No. 141 on the Billboard 200, respectively. By 2001, Fates Warning had sold over a million albums worldwide. Their thirteenth studio album, Long Day Good Night, was released on November 6, 2020.

Fates Warning Lyrics

There lurks a silent scream
How can I breathe when the weight
Of words crash down on me?
And I feel stranded
I can't take it
I'm wandering lost
[Chorus]
Don't make me comfort you
Don't make me crawl inside your head
Don't make me comfort you
Don't make me crawl, crawl, crawl
I will take apart the view
And you will take apart the scene
Take away the mask of innocence
It doesn't suit you
[Chorus]
And I feel stranded
I won't take it
I'm wandering lost
[Chorus x 2]
The lyrics of Fates Warning's song Crawl convey a sense of anxiety and despair, with the singer feeling overwhelmed by the weight of words crashing down on them. The underlying thoughts are so deep and repressed that they lead to silent screams, making it almost impossible to breathe. The singer feels stranded and lost in this situation as they wander around without direction, unable to take the pressure anymore.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the singer's frustration and inability to deal with someone else's problems. They do not want to be responsible for comforting someone else or trying to understand what is going on in their head. The use of the repeated phrase "don't make me crawl" highlights the singer's desire to avoid being burdened with someone else's issues.
In the second verse, the singer takes the focus away from themselves and directs it towards the person causing their distress. They promise to dismantle the other person's perspective on the situation while the other person will be forced to confront the reality of what is happening. The singer perceives the other person as wearing a "mask of innocence," which they believe does not suit them.
Overall, the lyrics of Crawl convey a sense of emotional distress and the desire to escape from the burden of other people's problems. The song encourages people to face reality and drop the defensive facade that they may have built up to protect themselves.
