Revolutionary
Faulkner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Torches lit water flows,
Visions come words will go,
Laws are made statutes are unwinding.

Empires rise kingdoms fall,
Eagles soar snakes will crawl,
Walls are raised as medusa is shattered.
I'd start a revolution
A turn of the page
Rebels and the misfits
The world is our stage.

I'd rather sing flat with heart,
Than hollow words in perfect tune,
I'd rather be broke with dreams,
Than gossiping with wealthy thieves.
I'd rather die with honor than live a day with defeat.

I'd start a revolution
A turn of the page
Rebels and the misfits
The world is our stage.

I'd start a revolution
A turn of the page
Rebels and the misfits
The world is our stage.

I'd start a revolution
A turn of the page

Rebels and the misfits
The world is our stage.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Faulkner's song Revolutionary sets the scene of a world in fluctuation. The imagery of torches lit and water flowing suggests something that's constantly moving forward, but the following line, "visions come words will go," suggests that perhaps ideas come and go just as easily as water. The next two lines, "laws are made statutes are unwinding" once again reinforces the idea that nothing is set in stone and that everything is constantly changing.

The following lines introduce the motif of empires rising and falling, eagles soaring and snakes crawling, and walls being raised and medusa being shattered. These lines are reinforcing the idea that progress is often accompanied by destruction. To bring about change or revolution, sacrifices must be made.

The chorus of the song "I'd start a revolution, a turn of the page, rebels and the misfits, the world is our stage" suggests that the singer is ready to bring about a change, to start something new, and that the world is ready for it. The lines that follow seem to reinforce the idea that the singer is willing to make sacrifices for the cause, to be true to their values and beliefs, and that they're willing to die fighting for what they believe in than to live with the regret of compromise.

Overall, Faulkner's song Revolutionary seems to be a call to action, an anthem for the ones who believe that change is possible, and that they're willing to stand up for what they believe in.

Empires rise kingdoms fall,
The rise and fall of empires is a natural part of history, highlighting the importance of adaptability and change over time.

Than hollow words in perfect tune,
Words that carry no meaning and are not true to ourselves are empty and can't accomplish anything in the long run no matter how nicely they are said.

I'd rather be broke with dreams,
Dreaming is indispensable– money can't buy passion or ambition.

Than gossiping with wealthy thieves.
Being around people who lack morals and values is not a desirable trade-off for material gain.

I'd rather die with honor than live a day with defeat.
Death with respect is preferable to humiliation while still living. Have the strength and dignity to fight for what is right and just, often to the end.
