His best-known solo material is the 1985 UK chart-topping single penned by Maria McKee, "A Good Heart", which went to number one in several countries. His solo work is significantly different from the semi-punk offerings of The Undertones. He also got a UK number 5 in 1986 with "You Little Thief".
Starting in 1992 Sharkey moved into the business side of the music industry, initially as an A&R manager for Polydor Records and then as Managing Director of EXP Ltd. He was appointed a Member of the Radio Authority for five years from December 1998 to December 2003. He then became Chairman of the UK Government task force the 'Live Music Forum' in 2004.
Please Don't Believe in Me

I'll only let you down
Time was the hunt was on
You'd run me right into the ground
Now I'm feeling so confused
Now I hold the winning hand
but I wish that I could lose
Car without a wheel
Plane without a pilot
That's how I feel
Please don't believe in me
I don't know what you feel
When we first kissed I held you close
I only know it seemed so real
And all the landmarks changed around me
I wish I could begin again
and I wouldn't start from here
For a plan without a purpose
Car without a wheel
Plane without a pilot
That's how I feel
That's how I feel
Please don't believe in me
And don't you trust my love
We messed around with too much passion
Sometimes too much is not enough
The path I'm travelling seems so crazy
I listen out for clear directions
but only hear the bridges burn
For a plan without a purpose
Car without a wheel
Plane without a pilot
That's how I feel
That's how I feel
That's how I feel
In Feargal Sharkey's "Please Don't Believe in Me," the singer pleads with his partner not to put their faith in him because he fears he will only let them down. He describes feeling confused and wishing he could lose, even though he holds the winning hand. He alludes to a past where he was pursued and run into the ground, and now he feels like he is a car without a wheel or a plane without a pilot.
The singer reflects on the beginning of their relationship when everything seemed real and the landmarks around him changed, but now he wishes he could start over. He tells his partner not to trust his love, as they have already messed around with too much passion, and the path he is traveling seems crazy. He listens for clear directions but only hears bridges burning.
The song seems to express the singer's fear of intimacy and commitment. He is haunted by past failures and is unable to fully trust in himself or his relationships. The repeated metaphor of a car without a wheel or a plane without a pilot emphasizes his sense of aimlessness and lack of control. Ultimately, he asks his partner not to believe in him, suggesting that he may not even believe in himself.
