River
Fears Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, the streets have started burning
There's trouble in the towns
Guess the devil loves his playground, that's for sure
I too often see the world through a veil of tears
Well, to hell with my immunity
Gonna hold you close
'Til the shadows disappear
(Rivers of mercy, yeah)

If by magic, you mean the ocean
If by tragic, you mean the end
We weren't wrong, we were just hungry
For manna from Heaven
And come on drown me in the infinite sea

Drop me in rivers of mercy, yeah
Dare I imagine some faith and understanding?
Drop me in rivers of mercy, yeah
Bring out the dead tonight and bathe them in your sacred light to
Wash away the pain (wash away the pain)
Save me from the shadows, yeah
Cry like a siren
The light on my horizon
Drop me in rivers of mercy, yeah

Show me mercy, miracle waters
Make me golden, part of the dream
We got stung
We were just lovers
Born of temptation
Slow down, river, and float me upstream

Drop me in rivers of mercy, yeah
Dare I imagine some faith and understanding?
Drop me in rivers of mercy, yeah
Bring out the dead tonight and bathe them in your sacred light to
Wash away the pain (wash away the pain)
Save me from the shadows, yeah
Cry like a siren
The light on my horizon
Drop me in rivers of mercy, yeah

Spinning upside down
In the wake of mighty waves
See the anger of the world
When feelings run high
When feelings are so raw
We will give in to the night

Drop me in rivers of mercy, yeah
Dare I imagine some faith and understanding?
Drop me in rivers of mercy, yeah
Bring out the dead tonight and bathe them in your sacred light to
Wash away the pain (wash away the pain)
Save me from the shadows, yeah
Cry like a siren

The light on my horizon
Drop me in rivers of mercy, yeah

Overall Meaning

In the first verse of Fears's song "River," the singer speaks of the overpowering presence of rage in their life that has led them to the brink of suffocation. They yearn for a reprieve from the constant pain that they have endured, as evidenced by the scars that still remain. Despite their struggles, the singer's will to persevere and overcome is commendable. They are determined to reach the goal that they have set for themselves, even if it means facing obstacles along the way. However, the singer is not invincible, and there is a strong sense of vulnerability in the line "before I break down and fall into a sheltered hole." This line shows that even though they are trying to rise above their struggles, they fear that they may still succumb to their limitations and fall into a state of despair and hopelessness.

The second verse explores the singer's contemplation of life's purpose and the perceived injustice that they witness on a daily basis. The line "I wonder why we are here distorted and so unclear" expresses the singer's confusion and unease about their place in the world. They question the worth of existence and the fairness of the world, citing the wars and greed that have plagued society. The final line of the verse "something has to change before I" is left open-ended, allowing the listener to interpret it as they will. It could be seen as a call to action or a resignation that change may not occur in their lifetime.

Overall, "River" is a poignant and introspective song that delves into themes of pain, perseverance, and existentialism.

I didn't think Tears for Fears could ever write another song like "Famous Last Words" or "Woman In Chains" again, until I heard this one. It absolutely floored me. I listened to the album for the first time all the way thru, and have loved every track. All the great more Curt-centric stuff, and then this came on and blew my mind. I have never gotten such an emotional reaction to one of their songs since Famous Last Words. The context of this song, with all that is going on in the world right now, this just fits it so powerfuly! It's almost like a Gospel song. This is a new masterpiece. The whole album is excellent!

Agree, totally. I hear that work every week. Masterpiece

@Chad Cassidy Lol. Those songs are not dark sounding. Are you thinking of New Order?

@tom mac They didn't say it was better? Chill out.

@tom mac I think Woman in Chains sounds more 'beautiful' thanks to the brilliant voice of Oleta Adams, which perfectly fits Roland's vocals. Woman in Chains is now part of their best repertoire, and benefited years of listening. It's true, it's difficult not to like it, but Rivers of Mercy also has a strong point in its lyrics. While Woman in Chains leaves the listener in some sadness because of the couple's struggle, Rivers of Mercy lifts the listener's soul to the realms of hope. It is my personal opinion.
